Bill Mixon 1940 - 2019

In May 2019 Bill Mixon passed away following a period of declining health.

Bill grew up in Hammond, Indiana, and his early life was devoted to science, winning a science fair and a Merit Scholarship.  He attended the University of Chicago, where he received a B.S. in physics and M.S. in mathematics.  He became a computer programmer and engineer, working in the physics labs at the University of Chicago, and later at the University of Texas at Austin.

He became a permanent fixture at NSS Conventions his first was in New Braunfels, Texas, in 1964.  I first met Bill at the 1971 NSS Convention

In his travels, Bill was always accompanied by his Saluki dog, named Silly or Sally. As one passed on, he always got another Saluki. In the 1970s Bill took on a high profile in the NSS, holding such positions as Internal Organizations Committee Chairman and Administrative Vice President.  In 1971 he was elected to the Board of Governors, where he would serve for 25 of the next 26 years. His awards include NSS Fellow (1971), William J. Stephenson Outstanding Service Award (1987), and Spelean Arts and Letters Award (1999).

A keen collector of caving books.  I kept him well stocked with caving books from Europe and over the years he wrote numerous book reviews for the NSS News.
