This seems a very strange 1st post for a caving forum.  :-\

However, I think Capn' Chris should be able to give you teh definitive answer on this.  :smartass:

I don't use these cert-sites.

I buy the books and of course I have many years of experience and book the exam with http://www.prometric.com and pass the exam. Damm I'm good, 91% on my advanced wireless ;)

The best advice I can give is split it into small chunks, buy some kit on ebay, you can get some relatively cheap cisco routers. Even the CCNA now requires a demonstration of hands on experience. Infact I have a couple of routers and cables and I know joker001 is interested. If you, joker001 and anyone was interested I can run a course at one of the caving huts in priddy (wcc, bec, smcc) I don't know if this would be frowned on being IT not caving but pop a few pounds in the honesty box and all will be right with the world. Maybe I could fire questions at you while under pressure and under water at swildons 20?

Blimey, if getting a CISCO qualification means pushing from Swildons 12 to Swildons 20 I reckon it's mission impossible....

Wouldn't touch any cert site with an elctronic bargepole,

you need hands on experience,

Mr c**tplaces is right,

get cheep kit and the books learn off somebody who already knows what they're talking about

gotta agree. I've interviewed some "qualified" people with zero rea llife expereince. I asked one guy a question, and he asked me to give him some answers to choose from..  ::) > :annoyed: > :'(  He didn't get the job.....

Personally I hate doing the qualifications - if you ask me a question from the exam I probably wouldn't know but if you ask me to do it in Real Life I do fine - experience over qualifications almost every time.

I've been in my present job for 7 years now, :o

Working in a primary school.

started with 5 windows 98 pc's on a peer to peer network,  :wall:

nowadays I'm the sys admin for over 40 pc's (win xp pro) and a server.  :clap2:

I've had to learn the hard way how to keep it all running,  :tease:

The only qualification I've gained that I've got is a JEB diploma in teaching adults IT skills. :coffee:

large organisations these days have to maintain a documented level of certification. Companys that wish to have Gold Status from Cisco have to keep a minimum number of CCNAs, CCNPs, CCIEs, have various audited Gold Labs (labs of cisco kit) availiable to engineers and a set number of speclizations (wireless, voip, security). You cant do that on experience only so engineers have to maintain and get certifications, retaking exams every 2-3 years.
