I have seen too many of my caving mates off over the last twenty years and the vast majority have been non religious Humanist ceremonies.

Oh come on! Either you are wanting to drag this pathetic topic out beyond the time it should die a natural death (and hopefully burn in Topic Hell), or are just too lazy to look up the word yourself. This is not Wikipedia you know.

There is no law (or even divine command) that requires you to read it, you know. Why not just ignore the thread & let those who wish to continue the discussion do so?

I was in the Scouts; still am for that matter. I do "do my best to do my duty to God and to the Queen", I just fail miserably.

This kind of begs the question: What is your duty to a non-existent supernatural being and to the head of a dysfunctional family?

Depends whether you agree that they are made believe or a bunch of chavs I suppose?
There a plenty groups and clubs out there. If you don't like the way one operates why not join another or form your own?

Apologies if I'm being stupid here, but I do not see how this comment follows on from the one above.

Well, this one receives public funding and therefore should not discriminate against a section of the public. This is, I would hazard a guess the reason that they are unable to refuse membership to girls, any longer. Why the law should refuse discrimination on gender grounds but continue to allow it on religious grounds is quite beyond me.

I was unaware that the Scouts were publicly funded. Could you elaborate? Also, if the Scouts accept girls so as to remain legal, how come the Guides still do not accept boys?

As for "duty to the Queen". I always interpreted that as "duty to the Crown/State" rather than to an individual old lady who lives in London. That bit of the promise really should be clarified and updated.

Well for a start many groups have charitable status & receive tax rebates under the Gift Aid scheme. As for the guides, haven't a clue. I know nothing about them, apart from the fact that the wife was thrown out of Brownies for leading her friends astray and getting them all muddy.

That was some years ago, mind. ;)

You may be right!  Although I sincerely doubt it.

Well I'm charitable enough to hope I'm wrong to be honest. I won't burn in a fiery eternity if you're correctt...

As there's no  evidence that you're right I'm on a safe bet then. Burning in Hell holds the same fear for me as nocturnal visits from "pro-bono proctologists from other star systems"

But Alex, be honest now, wouldn't you be a little disappointed if someone proved you have no chance of being rectally probed in your sleep by curious aliens?  :tease:

From what I've heard that's a normal occurrence at the Belfry most weekends.

there should have been a third option.

Agnostic.

as a funeral director I meet a lot of different people with lots of differing religions and opinions about whats real and whats no. maybe one  of the issues with christianity is it has stole a lot of celebration days from other religions, it has made the new testament fit with the idea from the church in rome.
the other side of the argument is that people tell that their loved one have had visions on their death beds of heaven.

all I know it I do not know the answers. If it provides comfort to people then so thats fine.

My question to any christian is if Jesus was alive today would he approve of what the church & christianity has become from the idea that he was a simple carpenter?

Nope, If you take the simple premise that "A" - "theist" means without - god(s) then the person who does not know whether there are (or are not) god(s) is also "without" them and is thus atheist.

There is another take on this in that it can be argued that "gnostic" refers to knowledge whereas "theist" refers to belief and that the two are not, therefore, talking about about the same thing. I, for example, do not know with 100% certainty that there are no gods (Maybe there are hundreds congregating on a rock just past Betelgeuse) but I act on a day-to-day basis as if there are not any as I have no evidence to the contrary. I am thus both agnostic and atheist. In debates like this, I call myself a functional atheist as I think that best describes my position.
