Do beards affect caver pecking order?

Just had a mental scroll through our membership list to see how many people have beards. Just 5 that I can think of - out of about 70 members.

This gives us a club-beard rating of just 7% (10% if we exclude the women) - so we're clearly not a proper caving club!

get the light just right and its surprising just how furry female faces can be :shock:

I'm gona get smacked for that comment now... Its almost as bad as when asked on national radio why females dont seam interested in the underground I said something like 'They dont like getting muddy even though they sit around with mud packs on thare face'....

Sometimes I dont shave when I know I am off underground in a few days, gets me in the mood! Its damm itchy though!

I've tried that but the helmet strap rash doesn't make it worthwhile.

I grew a beard after an exped in 2002 and my caving has gone downhill ever since, contravening the 'hard caver' theory... But I don't like folk music so I guess I'm okay...

Beards were the `in thing' in the 70`s with cavers - along with smoking pipes (if you dident have a Peterson pipe and smoke black shag you were a queer)

This is easy.

The bigger and bushier the facial hair, the less likely a caver is to have a wife or girlfriend.

Therefore they get to do a lot more caving and are therefore progressively "harder" and more respected.  :

Disagree. Now we're in the 21st century as opposed to the eighteenth, fewer and fewer cavers sport beards. In fact, it's now pretty rare to meet bushy-faced cavers underground (although plenty still hold up the bar in drinking establishments).

Most cavers are now non-beardies in my experience.
