    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

Firstly, happy Chrimbo to all our users and thanks for your continuing support.

Secondly, the forum has been hit by the Santy worm over the last few days which has resulted in poor performance and the site being taken down.

This is hopefully now fixed, but any further outages will probably be due to the same problem.

Bubba, the new worms attack any php based website (as I am sure you are aware) I 'think' I have a .htaccess file which redirects horrid worms away. All has been quiet of guests with worms since applying the .htaccess file. Its basicly an apache mod_rewrite inboound url filter. Let me know if you want to take a peek.

Cheers DP - I just applied the recommended code fix to the .php page that was used in the attack.

Not had any bother since.

The brand spanky version of phpBB will be out before too long anyway, and I'll be upgrading then.

144ms is what i'm getting today - i'll sometimes get lower but never less than 100.

But 100ms isn't going to time you out of anything.

I've only just got up (i blame beer with SamT last night) so haven't seen any problems but it seems to be running ok now...

keeps timing out,
I have a very fast computer but this forum keeps timing out.
Why is that?

Afraid not just recent, about every few days I get this today is one of those days,
just keeps timing out. :-\

I suspect, young Lackington, that it's just down to the fact that the world wide interweb gets a bit congested sometimes and your packets get stuck in a traffic jam somewhere.

It's not a browser issue, i always use firefox.

I very occasionally get timeouts, but only for about 5 mins every few weeks or something. I put it down to general web congestion or something.

The only time that you will definitely get timed out is when the server automatically reboots the databases and the webserver, which is around 1am iirc.

If you're often getting timeouts, are they at the same time every day?

Not timing out tonight but unbearably slow, just not worth the effort, it is this site.
The rest of the internet for me works fine.

What ping do you get to the site?

Mine is still around 140, same as usual.

If your ping is ok from a cmd window then it may be a browser issue?

One thing i will have to watch out for is site performance if the chatroom gets busy - i'm unsure of it's impact at the moment.

I get a bit of a delay now and then, not much more of a pause. It feels like normal high traffic load.

There were between five and ten in the chatroom this evening, talking utter drivel. Can't say if it affected performance. It seemed OK to me. There may be a surge in activity until the novelty wears off. Check the log to see how busy it was, and how serious the drivel was.

How do you ping this site, and what score is good? I know what a ping is but don't know how to do it, and may be good for future reference. Thanks!

Start > run
type 'cmd' then pres enter.
at the prompt type 'ping www.ukcaving.com'

Generally speaking, the lower it is the better.
The ping is the time in micro seconds it takes for the signal to get from you to server and back again.
