Cussey Pot, Eyam

Middleton's dive goes under white rake dig, there's an air bell directly beneath it in the same rift. Probably would have made for a disappointing breakthrough, but doesn't explain the draft which must be coming from elsewhere

?Measured? from NW end of white rake survey on page 10 (and a half) in TSG19. But I?ve never been, so measurements have not been taken from any passage that ?would go? with pushing.

I know John Beck won't mind if I add the White Rake dig survey to the Peak District Cave Registry - I thought I had, to be honest, but I must have dreamt it. Or maybe I dreamt John telling me to do it. Also the Area Map below that does have all currently digitally-surveyed cave and passages overlain, and it can be viewed in full-screen, though sadly not zoomable any further. It does have satellite and BGS bedrock options too. Worth a look:

Thanks for that chaps. It brings to mind Dr. Short's description of Carlswark in 1734 - "by another of its grottoes it opens near Fowlow (Foolow)... passing quite under Eyam Church." The claim was almost certainly exaggerated, but his statement has inspired generations of cavers to search for the "master cave" that undoubtedly exists, and much of which must lie beneath Eyam.

Cussey Pot has just been added to the public Peak District Cave Registry: https://peakdistrictcaving.info/home/the-caves/stoney-middleton/cussey-pot

As actual cave descriptions are hidden (because they form the basis of the next issue of Caves of the Peak District), a link has been provided in the Access panel to the Eldon website for updates and the (latest!) cave description.

We hope you enjoy your visit :)

I look forward to hearing some thrilling tales.

Just on the side of caution. All of our digging ropes are still in there so it may be best for people to check the condition before descending. Also if any damage to report it here too.  (y)

Copying Badlad's style of dig reports supported by short, raw video shots, here's about our latest breakthrough in Cussey:

I have been following reports on the Eldon site....great to follow all the work and breakthroughs.....and still such high potential for that area to be opened up more especially with addition of the fining the master cave by divers

The short video clips are great for showing what a cave is really like.  This one is G5 hardcore and a lot of gear washing too  ;)

Well done all

I had been looking forward to a trip down here. But, having seen the videos... I realise I'm busy that day.

I finally saw the lid for real last week, if that counts? Some local resident said to us: 'Are you looking for that mine thing? It's ovver theer'. Anyway, we were on a walk that day in clean clothes (24km, so not bad), but I'll get there eventually :)

The Cussey route to the east, taking in the sights of Timewarp, has now been passed by a Eldon caver of "larger build", so can't be all that bad.  (y)

A bit of discussion on here about how it all fits together, especially Cussey and the new Master Cave. Well for those interested i strongly suggest going out and getting yourselves a copy of latest Descent - Issue 285.
https://wildplaces.co.uk/descent-285.html

This includes an updated survey of the whole area, plus a report by Mike Butcher on discovering the SMMC.  (y)

When you see the survey you see see how it's amazing that the ~1km of SMMC manages to wiggle about but still miss all the known cave around!!!

Any chance of the White Rake dig connecting to A Race against Time - and the far reaches of Nicker Grove being opened up again?

Very interesting article in Descent!

Yeah, I was pondering the Nickergrove level being opened up again; maybe that alleged tube at the end would link in. I'm not sure what the elevation difference between the SMMC and the Nickergrove level is.

Given that Nickergrove is part of the west-east drainage hopefully it's at the same(ish) level. We shall await the experts with anticipation.
