Issue with Fenix headbands and finding a replacement

Have you tried re-threading it to put the end clasp thing on the inside of the strap? Against your head/helmet. I haven’t got one here to test it but I reckon the friction of being on the inside will lower the load on the clasp itself.

    Bouldering on Easegill?!

There’s a guide on the unknownstones blog. https://unknownstones.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/ease-gill.pdf Finding a day when it’s dry with no midges must be quite tricky. All looks quite hard too.

    Steel vs aluminium scaff tubes

Assuming the geometry is the same for each one, your deflection test would just compare the stiffness of the two tubes (related to Youngs Modulus and wall thickness). For the load capacity, the load at which it would fail in bending is related to the wall thickness and yield strength (permanent...

Easegill Open House 20-30 June 2025

Five of us from Fylde MC took advantage of the the Red Rose Open House yesterday and were made to feel very welcome at the Farm. Thanks for setting this up and we will definitely come again if it becomes a regular thing. (I briefly spoke to a Rachael/Rachel? at the County Entrance pitch...

    Ruptured achilles tendon

Bit of a shout out for Andy Mcvittie (process physiotherapy). He did an evening talk for our club last year. Climbing-focused but very straight talking and down to earth about getting things fixed. I think he’s based around boulder uk, SW Preston.

    A question about the gym

The actual energy that goes into the ‘mgh’ element of prussicking is pretty small. Say you climb a 30m pitch in 5mins. That’s 80x10x30=24,000J over 5x60=360s =66watts. 33 watts if it takes (me) 10mins. A human sat at a desk just breathing is about 80w. Amateur cyclist can do 200w for an hour...

    Wrist watches for caving

Against the theme of the thread, but I cave with a Garmin Fenix 6 with sapphire glass. Initially I was scared to damage it and started with a series of screen protectors that just cracked every couple of days. I abandoned those and just wore it. I work on site a lot and it gets knocked and in...

    Multiple battery chargers

Assuming they are nimh cells, this is a standard thing for remote controlled cars etc. There are lots of online retailers selling chargers that work for 4-8cells. The terminology works like this : 5S1P = 5 cells in series, just one string of cells. Which would be a 5x1.2v = 6v pack. 10S2P =...

    Notts 2 fixed ladder

On a trip to Notts 2 yesterday, we noticed that one of the fixed ladders is deteriorating quite badly. After the main shafts, there’s a tighter bit, then a bit of a rift to climb over and down with hanging ladder. It’s the ladder after this, about 6ft long, concreted in at the base and loose at...

Win a Rab Protium 27L Backpack with the 2nd of the Inglesport Fabulous 5 competitions!

Top tip for expeditions : For any mums doing cave dives longer than 3 hours and still breast-feeding, you can fit a medium-sized baby in a dry-tube built from a Gavin tube and two nose-cones.

Easegill Open House 20-30 June 2025

This looks fantastic, well done for organising. I'm trying to round up a group of Fylde MC cavers past and present to come along. Likely to be the Tuesday or Thursday. I will fill in the form once I've got some numbers and we will try to all cram in a van. Bull Pot Farm was our original caving...

    'pretty' caves in the dales?

Glasfurd’s Chamber in Gavel is a worth a visit and quite easy to get to. Longer trip if you start at Short Drop and/or bottom Gavel too. I couldn’t actually fit through the calcite squeeze to the final chamber 😂, so here’s a selfie taken in the approach passages whilst my team mates went for a...

Source for storage and transport containers

Solent Plastics are good. We've used them for organising our uni dive club bits. For the shed and for on boats. 'Locally' (Kirkham, Lancashire) I've bought a lot of the rent-a-crate style hinged double-lidded boxes from Alison Boxes. This one in particular is good because you can fit fins in...

Karabiner found Lost Johns Hammer Pot

Found a karabiner in the pool at the top of hammer pot today. Orange+Purple tape I think. It looks like it was dropped by the team of two on NPC ropes who were on their way out. I’ve left it with the folks working outside the front of Greenclose today ( Sat 3rd May )

Best diving torches (Durability vs Affordability)

I have two halcyon scouts that I’ve taken on every dive over 24years. In the sea and cave diving. I replaced the lamp units with LED around 2007. They seemed expensive at the time as a student, about £40 each. Machined from a solid bar of delrin, including the tie-in hole. I have no doubt that...

Oversuit Killers - worst oversuit rips

Not an oversuit, but my most expensive drysuit rip occurred whilst I was diving the James Egan Layne in Whitsand Bay. Equipped with two decent Suex scooters, we set off to see how many laps of the wreck we could do with the hour or so of gas we had available. After three or four circuits we...
