I was thinking that it was quiet on here as well......

I must admit, I've done quite a bit in Stoney Middleton over the last year - reopening old stuff, finding new bits, smoke tests etc, etc and I've not written it up on here...... :-[

PLEASE write it up, as for me that type of news is the KEY reason I log in and look for news. The recent news on Gautries was brilliant. Anyone else got any on-going dig news??????

I feel a slight twinge of guilt here (it soon passed though) because my caving-related posts are very few and far between these days. However, being an old fart and unlikely to do any serious caving again doesn't stop me from having a lifelong passion for caves and caving.

I suspect there are more than a few folks visiting this forum who for various reasons are no longer able to cave or who just happen to be interested in the subject. Personally I'm very grateful to those good people who post about their active caving exploits and I devour their output avidly. No matter how mundane they might regard their efforts themselves. and how reticent they might be about posting, rest assured there's a very appreciative audience out there!

Lots of cavers simply like to get on with it and not blow their own trumpet about all the stuff they are doing. Personally, I'm digging, organising trips for my club, commercial caving, helping another club with a trip to mendip but none of it is such earth shatteringly big news that I feel the need to post about it.

Tony - keep up the jokes mate, I love them! - the more un-PC, the better!

I'm like Tony, I can't get out caving/miner exploring much due to a number of reasons (having a very ill wife doesn't help) so the only trip reports, digs, discoveries etc I've been involved in are massively out of date (the last new passage I discovered, in Ogof Capel Dyddgen, 200ft and a long smelly dig in Greenbridge cave, were in the 1980's).  However, I still avidly read the posts, try and contribute what I can from a scientific armchair caver point of view, and can still get political and take action when some arseholes get out of line and start threatening our caves and countryside.

Good luck to all you hard bods out there who are writing up the new stuff, trip reports, expeditions, etc, but remember it's old codgers like us who paved the way for you, even if we can't contrubute as much as we'd like from a purely caving point of view.

Nuff said.

'they may not like to blow their own trumpets' but that is not what the people for example in the posts after yours seem to be wanting anyway. Its just great to hear - in between Descents - what is happening in the diferent caves around the country. Actually now I think about it I generally remember what extensions have been made in which caves and often forget who has made them (sorry fellow diggers if thats not what you wanted).

I spotted Mark's semi-windup first thing this morning (you don't change do you Mark?) but I was too busy stirring gear round for today's caving trip to respond.

Back now, with a bit more new passage found. I don't tend to update folk on here about such finds because I prefer to record things properly in a caving club journal, having had time to reflect on how they all fit into the bigger picture. There's nothing wrong with letting folk know about progress via this forum of course but I just find I make a better job of it if writing for a journal. Besides, we should all try to support our caving club journals by producing properly written material.

There are some exploration accounts on here which are actually very good - indeed I sometimes include them as references when I'm writing my own stuff.

Right; brew, grub, bath, caving diary (the latter, as ever, so basic details are written down for future journal work).

It's a forum Mark, not a definitive almanac of current caving activity.

Treat it like the pub. Just try not to piss on the bog floor or leave peanuts all over the seats.

Can I make a suggestion to the Editors please?
That the Wezzit? posts are given their own heading. This is because it blocks the leading posts to all areas
so often it makes the website much less user friendly ,in my opinion!

Well said Braveduck - I've been thinking aling similar lines for some time myself. The only thing which has prevented me from suggesting it is an acute awareness that this forum is maintained by volunteers and, not knowing how much work would be involved, I didn't want to rush in too soon.

I think you're right though; I'd certainly find it helpful if that topic could be separated.

It is good people like you write things up properly in caving journals having reflected on how your finds link with other things and the bigger picture - good practice. As you say there is also nothing wrong in letting others know of what progress has been made on this forum (and/or Descent). If I or others wanted to find lots of information on a particular cave and research it for say digging purposes then they are an excellent resource. I have done this with the Goyden system. There is also though the interest of hearing of what developments are taking place around the country and I am sure I am not the only one who gives and expects others to give brief headline news on a forum of and/or in Descent - I have to admit I am not going to buy every issue of journals from every club just to keep upto date with developments.

Do the Wezzit? threads really make it difficult to find your way through the forum? I'm not interested in reading them (because I simply don't have the time), but I just ignore them and don't feel they hinder my navigation of the forum. I tend to use the "Show unread posts since last visit" link, personally anyway.

Personally I'd quite like the 'Wezzit' threads to have their own section. Like you, Rhys, I don't have time to look at them and all too often when I look at the 'ukcaving' section the most recent posts are in 'Wezzit'. Yes, I know I could use 'Show Unread Posts' or whatever but I do find the 'Wezzit' threads something of a hindrance. My 2p worth...
