Can I make a suggestion to the Editors please?
That the Wezzit? posts are given their own heading. This is because it blocks the leading posts to all areas
so often it makes the website much less user friendly ,in my opinion!

Do the Wezzit? threads really make it difficult to find your way through the forum? I'm not interested in reading them (because I simply don't have the time), but I just ignore them and don't feel they hinder my navigation of the forum. I tend to use the "Show unread posts since last visit" link, personally anyway.

Rhys

Personally I'd quite like the 'Wezzit' threads to have their own section. Like you, Rhys, I don't have time to look at them and all too often when I look at the 'ukcaving' section the most recent posts are in 'Wezzit'. Yes, I know I could use 'Show Unread Posts' or whatever but I do find the 'Wezzit' threads something of a hindrance. My 2p worth...

I'm not sure what the problems is.

Are you clicking on "UK Caving / cave and mine exploration" in the list of "sections" and seeing a list of Topics, one of which is "Wezzit"? Or are you doing something else? I can't see why you annot just ignore the "Wezzit" Topic or any others in th elist you are not interested in.

Whatever the problem, having a separate section for the "Wezzit" postings would only mean the same thing would be needed for the next long-running Topic (and there have been quite a few such as "global warming", "Friday joke - WARNING - contains swearing", "Mendip Wezzit?", "Story Game.......", "Peak District - Wezzit?", "The Friday Video Clips thread", "GB cave", "Severn barrage", "Dowsing") and the one after that, the one after that, etc. until there are a huge number of sections and things become a bit confused and chaotic.

I have pretty much stopped contributing here mainly because of the apathy my posts seem to create. Either that or is sends somebody off on a moan. Much of the Mendip exploration stuff now goes on the Facebook sub group .That in itself is sad as the information there reaches only the restricted membership.( There have been a few new discoveries recently ). I am going to say it cus I find it true. I getter a better and more friendly response on another forum beginning with D. If you dont believe that look up my recent photo post on Reservoir Hole. I also put my extended history of Fairy Cave Quarry on there knowing all too well it would create little interest here. I cannot define why this is true. Perhaps I am a boring old git that nobody wishes to hear from. I do find this forum a disappointment. It is supposedly the UK's main caving forum yet I find little here to attract my attention. As for the Wezzets really they are just a space filler of little consequence that seem only to appeal to a few folk. So I am sorry to be so negative and I do realise the content of this forum is not the fault of the moderators who in general do a good but thankless job. ( I am a moderator on another forum, non cave related ). Well I have said what I feel and that is the basis of a true forum. How the apparent malaise can be remedied I have not a clue.

I for one am always interested in progress reports  :D sorry though if I haven't shown my interest enough by posting a reply or two. I do contribute progress reports as well. Yes it is sad if it retires to a face book sub group with restricted members. I love it when cavers open information centrally like cave mappers site and forums like this - that's why I didnt agree with that we should support clubs by restricting progress reports to club journals.

Though we don't do much exploring both of the clubs I belong to post thier trip reports etc online for all to see. The BRCC does not even have a written journal its all online.

Old Ruminator suggests apathy - it could be that people don't have time to reply as much as they would like? I frequent a few sites and can't spend time replying or commenting on everything I read so have to be very selective about what I do post (not that I consider myself particularly knowledgable in any subject, so sometimes I don't bother because I figure someone else will provide a better reply)

I know of people that have stopped posting or only post occasionaly because of what they describe as "a minority of overly opionated people that have too much time on their hands", I have also heard the forum referred to as UK-grumping (as Old Rumi suggests it sends people off on a moan - bit like this thread perhaps?) If this forum portrays that kind of image it cannot be a good thing!

Those that complain of wezzit posts - are you using the recent posts link, surely it also shows (as paul mentions above) other active topics in a similar fashion? I can't see how else it causes "issues". I always land on the portal which shows ten recent topics (rather than threads) which is a pretty good starting point.

And like Goydenman I like reading progress reports or even history, more so for areas I'm familiar with, I don't really indulge in digging myself so can't post anything worthwhile (maybe one day when I finally get some time on my hands!) I think this forum and journals can (should) co-exist and provide worthwhile information - as I said I like reading odds and ends of reports on here (and other sites) but also equally like reading journals and despite utilising the internet to a fair degree I would consider it a sad day if it replaced journals altogether.

Yes, so would I like to read historys of caves - eg Fairy. A lack of response doesn't necessarily mean apathy. A 'like' button after posts would be a very good way to show appreciation for comments without clogging up the general flow of the information.

This forum is important, it is the UK caving online forum. Granted it could be better, but so could everything. Private FaceBook groups are important too, and so are printed journals and magazines. They all serve different purposes.

The clear message from this thread is:

  Stop moaning, start posting.

Interestingly there's been some really good threads kicked off since this one started, and a few more trip reports - coincidence?

So keep it coming, and of course for the quiet patches we've always got Wezzit :)
