I don't think nearly hitting somebody for not wearing a helmet is very responsible at all.

Get your point but it's a lot more sensible than hitting them.

Don't tell me you don't get the urge to do stupid things? I imagine you are intelligent enough to control such urges.

Sometimes we all do stupid things.

I would never go up and give somebody an arrogant lecture in such a fashion. Sorry, but i think it's really out of order. Perhaps a quiet friendly word, but to call people assholes for not having helmets in a small, safe cave is out of order in my book.

Perhaps he should have got the hint at this point:
My Mates tried to explain that "maybe they shouldn't go any further" To which they totally ignored them & carried on down.

a small, safe cave

I understand the adults were getting the children up over the coffin lid skating rink. That's not a safe place to be with a small child without a helmet! Paul regularly takes children caving. Perhaps his anger at seeing other adults putting young children at risk is justified. He thought the younger ones were little more than 7 or 8 years old (?) I'm sure now he's calmed down he can enlighten us further, when he gets online again.

Other 'safe' places in Goatchurch include Back Door entrance and Coal Chute.

I met Paul and Co in the Hunter's Sat evening and I was surprised at how cross Paul and Alan were about it. Paul is normally a very laid back person and not at all like him to get p**sed off like that. As Peter said, it wasn't what they were doing that was so irritating but their response.

My son's first trip into Goatchurch - note helmet - my wife would have killed me otherwise!

No but several layers of clothing including a fleece - he was complaining of being too hot much of the time.
And an improvised 5-point harness attached to me - the only one of us who was scared and nervous was me, a bit over-protective parent until I relaxed a bit - I did not want him falling anywhere - there are places in Goatchurch that a small child could get very badly hurt indeed if allowed to fall.
Nowhere in GC is more than 10-15 minutes from the exit which is why it is such a good cave for beginners.
I'd like to get a warmbac and furry for him though so I can take him into the upper series of Swildons one day, perhaps in the summer as I know he would enjoy it.

Copied the post to edit the image line, but it's been done properly now! This post can be removed if any mods happen to be around.

Thanks, I had some fun getting it to work, what did I do wrong?
What is the correct BBcode syntax for images like this?

I saw it briefly when you had first posted it. I think the only thing wrong was you had a space between the [ and img] just before the image url. Are you typing them in long hand? Why not just click the img icon?

Peter is right, you had an extra space in there.

Yes - in the thread you linked to, clever Bubba put spaces in the code to stop them being interpreted as a true image control, but you seem to have slavishly copied what he entered! You on the other hand just used curly brackets to achieve the same end.

I would hope that most Cavers who take Children Underground would step forward in the same situation rather than say "Oh well" & then have another Stupid Caver story to tell down the Pub ! o_O
Not at any point did I threaten to hit them I removed myself after I'd said my piece.

In similar situations in the past I've cheerfully had a quick "Good day; how far are you going?" and, depending on the response, followed it up with the "take-it-how-you-like" question "Do you think that's wise?".

A few start without helmets, they moan they hit the head more with a helmet, it gets in the way etc. I say everyone else wears one but fine. After a while they start wearing one. I say things like, "its a handy place to hang a decent light". One person who never used a helmet brought one and after one use went WOW I feel invincible with this thing on, I feel so safe I can think about what I am doing rather then worrying. I never push the point about helmets unless its a cave. You can get away without a helmet in a mine with a good roof and just walking about (I would rather not though). But a cave is all twisty and low etc. I have found, you leave people to choose, you turn up time after time with a helmet, only do easy walk about places, look all smug and cosy in it and they will start using one after a while. I normally say anything will do, bike helmet, builders helmet, anything to get them used to it and get it normalized.
