    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

Ok, hands up who used to ride a bicycle without a helmet?

My Dad must have been tough as I never noticed that he'd been regularly beaten up.

The question should be 'Would you take your children on a bike without a helmet somewhere where there was a significant risk of them getting hurt'. That is a closer scenario to what Paul witnessed.

I have. And bicycle clips. And I fitted mudguards where none existed.  :ang: But I'm sad - or just careful?  :-\

How about slipping while climbing down into Water Chamber and cracking their heads open on the way down? I'm not sure why you needed to ask that question.

Could not similar accidents occur whilst walking up the Twin Brook valleys?

twin brook valleys is this were the cave east twin is up by the cascades?

East Twin Brook Valley is the valley in which East Twin Swallet is found; West Twin Brook Valley is the valley in which Goatchurch, Sidcot Swallet etc are found.

well there are roads, and then there are roads.

I make my daughter wear a helmet riding on the road, but not when we ride round the fishermans tracks (our normal weekend ride) which are only frequented by the occasional slow moving fishermans car.

I used to ride the 15 miles to work without a helmet but bought one recently and now feel very vulnerable without it....

Nothing can induce my teenage stepdaughter to wear a helmet on her bike which she mainly uses after school before we get home from work....

Some good points made, another thing to consider is that our big adult helmets are reasonably big compared to little kidy heads and I'm sure an ill fitting helmet in many cases is as useful as not wearing one at all. Although it would make sense to make sure little kids are propperly suited up to keep them warm so they actually enjoy them selves and a headlight so they can climb about and see more easily at the same time. I guess it all comes down to nanny state and risk reduction.  :-[

Not sure where that leaves me......

The bottom line is that you are doing something with your eyes open and a clearly pre-defined idea of how far you intend to go. That level of carefully controlled danger is safe enough in practice.
I've seen some of your pictures of short range explorations to the limit of daylight - all stuff I have done myself and with my own kids.

For many years my wife, who is (that strange breed) a cyclist, has refused to wear a helmet.
She had an accident in Scotland last summer (crappy roads in Kirkcaldy - who's the local MP?) whilst doing the North Sea Circuit - a cycling route.
When she was collected by the ambulance crew she was asked "Why weren't you wearing a helmet?"
When she was seen by the A&E officer at Dunfermline Hospital she was asked "Why weren't you wearing a helmet?"
When she was seen by the Orthopedic register at Dunfermline Hospital she was asked "Why weren't you wearing a helmet?"
The hand surgeon at Dunfermline did a wonderful job on repairing the broken wrist.

Mrs Scott's mind is still as sharp as a surgeon's knife. She now wears a cycling helmet so that she can say "But I was wearing a helmet".

I can understand where you're coming from Paul, i've seen this alot in the dales.....But!, you shoulda just walked away, i'm not surprised they took an arrogant approach towards you, if someone ignored my advice then i'd just walk away and let them learn the hard way. If it were me not that for one second it would, i'd have swung for you just for interfering in the first place.
I certainly agree with Simon. My approach would be to offer advice along with the phrase "That's a very courageous decision". If they ignored it then that's their problem. And I presume their chldren's. But they're not my children - so.

Dunno. I'll check the label in my underwear. Ah, it seems I am actually someone called 'Dorothy Perkins'. Could be worse, I might have been 'Anne Summers'.

Absolutely: which is why when we take children for a walk up there they are wearing helmets.

Me dad used to ride (& win!) 100ml road races in the 50's without a helmet - only those leather strappy things were available than (no not from Ann Summers). On the other hand my son came off a bike wearing a helmet when he was about 13, head first into a concrete wall. He had severe concussion & we still have a fully functioning son & the shattered remains of the helmet. Draw your own conculsions!!
