This nonsense taken today from The C.S.C.C. Website

If you know it's nonsense, you presumably know how many are there; if you know why do you bother asking on here?

I am reliably informed that the leading light of the Cheddar Caving Club who is spearheading this project has had other things on his mind, recently, like setting up a new business.

The state of the data can be seen at http://www.ubss.org.uk/resources/surveys/survex/Burrington.3D
Now Mister Sparrows emporium is up and running,
will he be able to devote more time to surveying?
Why don't you go into the shop and ask him?

He was in my shop but he didn't ask me!

The answer is yes - now things have settled down a bit, and particularly in the quiet period after Xmas, we will get back to the survey and digging project.
Hello Mr.Sparrow,
might we be allowed to ask has The Bath/Rod's survey yet been completed?

Nah, all them p-hangers means that a magnetic survey is now completely out of the question.

I thougt DMM Eco Anchors were made from 316 Stainless Steel (http://cncc.org.uk/tg_placement.html), which as an Austenitic variety (http://www.mceproducts.com/knowledge-base/article/article-dtl.asp?id=18) has a very low magnetic permeability (1.003 to 1.005), vice standard steels at around 700 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permeability_(electromagnetism).

In short a P anchor will not affect a magnetic survey!

(Apologies for thread hijack!)

Did the through trip with Lesw the other day. A fine trip, many thanks to the diggers for making it possible.
Lesw pointed out the previously loose boulder at the top of Rod's which is now sat on the floor  (y) , we didn't count the bolts.

Are you going to Hidden Earth, Whileington? Speck there'll be plenty of Mendip news paraded during the weekend! - it's a "must-see" event for peeps like you.

The maillons which Bru and I left in situ on the Purple Pot eco-hangers last week have already been removed... doh! - the reason for leaving them was specifically so that people stop wearing the eco-hangers on the inside curve when pulling their gritty ropes through, if doing a "pull through" trip to Bath Swallet; the wear on the eco-hangers is already visibly significant and they've hardly been there long.

Perhaps someone has a couple of stainless maillons and some epoxy resin they would be prepared to donate to the cave.

Similar things used to happen to the P bolts in Giants Hole where cavers are often lowered back down into the Crabwalk from the traverse above.

The P bolts were getting worn due to cavers putting the rope directly in them. Maillons were put in by DCA so that they got worn instead of the P bolts and could be easily be replaced. They were stolen.

The replacements were locked shut. They were damaged by cavers attempting to steal them.

The answer in the end was to replace with two lengths of stainless cable attached to the P bolts at one end with a large steel ring at the other into which the rope may be placed. The ring is loose and can rotate freely to even out wear and the unit can be replaced if required.

There are alternatives used by sports climbers at the top of bolted routes to allow the climber to clip in and be lowered down.

May be worth considering.

Something like this?

The worry is that it'll be far too complicated for normal cretins cavers to understand.

Yes - that's what I was on about. I've seen them on sale in Inglesport.

I know - but it may help with the constant maillon removal and replacement problem...

Blatant tom-theivery, Chris. Some people out there can't resist the lure of shiny, nickable stuff, even though it would f**k someone else up. Permanent theadlock, superglue, evo stick etc on the mallon plus a good lever on the spanner deter most casual theives, the more persistant ones use bolt cutters anyway, rendering items useless.

Hey ho, you try your best then some tosser ruins it....... :coffee:

Mr Sparrow is busy moving his shop (read  all about it on this forum!)

Also, I think he spends his spare time pushing new discoveries

Why do you want the survey?
I would not object if you did something useful like drawing a better survey of Bath (ours was only a sketch).

How's the Bath / Rods survey coming along Mr.Sparrow?

It's coming along very nicely as a line survey to help us select dig sites.  I promise we will publish it properly when Drunkards is connected.
