best first sump?

A few years ago I remember starting to compile a list of free dives in the Dales. Not quite sure what happened to this - it may be in a box in the loft. But I remember there were at least 30 sites (and that was before going through the sump index systematically, to fill gaps).

I think there is already a list in existence, though not up to date. It's in (I think) either a LUSS Journal or an ULSA Review somewhere. (Langcliffe may be able to remind us?)

However, I think the advice for the O.P. already given above, to go for the Rowten free dives, is probably still the best bet. But with care . . .

Depends what you want to get out of it I would say...

If you just want some practise or want to access magnificent caverns beyond short sumps.

Maybe both, practise first then put it to good use

The most rewarding freedive I have done is Stoke lane slocker.

I remember the incident Pitlamp was referring to. It was a mutual friend of ours Pitlamp (Bald..s from Reefers) who gave them rough directions on how to find the Rowten Sumps at Braida Garth.. Having done that first mud river sump a handful of times myself - with BA, I was shocked they survived a free dive through there. I later became friends with one of the lads who was there, with the diver in question, that day.. It was obvious even to the other two that something had gone wrong. The lessons to be learnt from the above incident are one of the reasons I replied so negatively initially, research is paramount!..
The line and belays were in a state of disarray the last time I did this one btw (mud river that is)..
