The gate at backdoor has been removed and is lying on the deck.
Lady hamiltons has been attacked.
Myself and a few others from c**tplaces will be going to box tonight witha view of removing the gat and putting it somewhere safe untill it can be refitted. (either deeper in or someones house)
Making secure lady hamiltons.
Checking backdoor.

Emergency works really as the gate is totally disconnected to the wall it could disappear.

Just hope somebody doesn't think were attacking it!

Try speaking to the local police station first - tell them who you are what you're about and so on. They'll give you a reference number on request which you can present if you do get pulled.
As long as you sound like a responsible person going about a legitimate business you shouldn't have any problems.

Although contact with the police could result in the damage being bought to the attention of the owners (which we are trying to avoid as this will jeapardise access lots)

Fair point - I wasn't fully aware of the ownership status.
Certainly the option if you are the person appointed by the owner - but probably not in this case then.
An informal chat with the local bobby (if there is such a thing) may not do any harm though.

The land owner is a major international quarry company, the site is also protected by English Nature.
Both organisations were happy to ban ALL access and permanently block ALL the entrances.
It was only by the intervention of local cavers that access was maintained. If it comes to the attention of the owners that damage has been done to the gates then they are just as likely to block them all.
They won't enter into an access agreement and were prepared to tolerate "unofficial" access provided it caused them no problems or liability issues. Now that some lowlifes have done this damage to the gates, it is down to us (cavers) to restore them or the owners will just close of the mines altogether.

I see, thanks. I take back my previous comment then - likely to do lots of harm - and yes it seems that the quiet fix is the only way to do it.
Must have been some real thickos who did it as a quick look at the lock should have provided a less destructive and far simpler solution.

That depends what their motive was, whether they wanted access today, access everyday, were simply out to cause damage or whether they had a philosophical aversion to gates and locks. Without knowing who they were, how can you tell.

Perhaps it's just Art*.

* Also known as Criminal Damage perpetrated by insane people who aren't locked up yet and who wander around the place doing whatever their misguided imaginations invent for them, falling back on the word Art as an excuse/explanation, like graffiti vandals, believing its use confers some kind of immunity from prosecution (although it won't stop them from getting a good arty kicking if caught).

A "good arty kicking" is what they need.

Anyway, we are sorting things out 'in house' A date of the 14th Oct 2007 has been set to return with tools and what-not to facilitate the full repairs. The CSCC is kindly helping and paying. Anyone interested in helping can do so, we need rebar, cement, wood to create moulds for the cement. we need a genny, welding kit.

A new topic will appear on c**tplaces to manage who is coming and providing what.

Like Les says this is about keeping the landowner happy with the gate obligations.

Another conspiracy theory: Its The land owner and English Nature trying to make the caving communities efforts fruitless so they get their way and shut of access!!

Your point of view is welcomed, however if access becomes a problem its all too easy for the landowner to simply input a lot of cement into the situation with bat holes. Nobody wants a liability problem poping up so we'll keep them happy and the problem sorted.

Sunday 14th - 11am onwards lots of bodies welcome to assist with the gate rebuilding. If we have an excess of people you could always take a wander about into Wiltshire's finest stone mines.
