Cadeby Pot, entrance location info required.

Hi all,
Yesterday tried to find the entrance to Cadeby Pot, Mag limestone near Conisborough....without success. I visited this site some 30 years ago with Tony Gibbs...no problem finding the entrance then. In the intervening years birch and hawthorn scrub have taken hold. The written descriptions are not clear....some landmarks are , or seem , obvious, like the memorial bench, the two small quarries and the bridge over the old tarmac road. Looking back through past posts (2009) others have struggled, so any accurate info to help locate the entrances would be welcome,
Thanks in advance, best wishes Gordon

PS I have attached a photo of the 'memorial bench' mentioned in one description. The second small quarry is a short distance along the path behind the bench but the quarry doesn't appear to be the site/ location of the entrances.

The published grid reference might be inaccurate (pre-GPS). The YSS survey shows two entrances, about 10 metres apart. A Google maps extract in an article in The Doncaster Naturalist Vol 2 Issue 3 (available here ) gives an approximate location of the entrances near SK51459964. The site is a bat hibernaculum so it might be better to return when the weather has warmed up.

Thanks Andy, the 8 fig GR could be useful. I have been down once before....but a long time ago. OK re bats....will give it a few months then even if I manage to locate the entrance,
Best wishes Gordon

One of my workmates sent me a photo this afternoon of what appears to be Nearcliff Wood Rift Cave, asking me if I knew anything about it - him and his mates found it last week and wondered what it was. I said I'd pop out and have a look as soon as I get some free time, as the COPD entry says it's 88m long.

My mates may have found it this afternoon, and just WhatsApped me a short video showing how to find it.

Hi Phil, I have been in Nearcliff Wood Rift a long time ago...there are quite a lot of short interesting caves in the vicinity, ....Nearcliff is another 'slip rift' similar to Cadeby but narrower than parts of Cadeby from memory.

They've located the other entrance this weekend, and he showed me a video of them climbing in - I might try and pop over soon when I can get out of work - looks quite interesting. He said it was draughting strongly at surface, but didn't feel much down at the choke at the base. I want to have a look at that too, but he said the remaining boulders are pretty large.

Hi Phil, been out today, Friday, for another look for Cadeby. Thought it might be easier having viewed the short video from your mate. Not so. The farmer who farms the large field above the location of Cadeby has been busy....the complete field edge surrounding the field has been planted with saplings, making it impossible to judge where your mates video clip showed the end of the line of planted saplings in the video. The obvious path line to get to the field edge has new barbed wire across....clearly the farmer wants to deter access this way.
If your mate can relocate the entrance, I suggest What3Words might be the best way to go. All other info is ambiguous at best. There are a few things that are very obvious...the bridge across the cutting coming down from the corner of the lane, two overgrown quarries and a couple of rock outcrops. Other than that the hillside is mainly covered in sharp thorny trees and bushes with brambles at ground level.
Best wishes Phil, Gordon

Doh, that's a pain - he's away today, but I can send him a message, as he might be around there tomorrow - I think they've probably been up from the valley floor rather than along the top. I'll update as soon as he does!
