Are there any recommendations out there for good camera equipment insurance.

Add to house insurance.  If damaged in a cave, say it fell into a duck pond

My camera equipment is insured on my household policy. My policy used to be with the NFU and they covered the camera equipment no problem. I had to have it as a named risk on the policy as the value was above their single item threshold, and cover was for all risks, new for old. I was very open about the caving and they still insisted it was covered. They said "All risks means ALL risks..."

The only time I claimed (for falling in a river whilst carrying the camera, not in a cave) they paid out promptly and for the total loss.

I changed from NFU this year as I was offered a substantially cheaper although similar policy. I have no idea how good the current insurers are as I have only been with them a month and have had no reason to claim.

I would not hesitate to recommend NFU, provided you get an acceptable price on the cover.

Like Les, I have camera cover on an NFU home contents policy; they coughed up without any problem when we had a bit of an incident in GB Cave.

I was trying to take a picture of somebody climbing the waterfall when a rock, estimated to be roughly the size and shape of a rugby ball, somehow 'got dislodged' and came whizzing down towards the photographer (me) and his assistant (my daughter) and a couple of lookers-on. The rock hit a ledge and shattered into fragments, which shot at us like shrapnel. In the ensuing chaos Charlotte stumbled and fell, and the flashgun she was holding (a fairly expensive Mecablitz) got smashed to bits.

The NFU were quite happy to pay out, notwithstanding that the incident happened underground.

Off-topic ? but one interesting aspect of this incident was that all four of us at the bottom of the waterfall felt that it happened in slow motion, while the 'poseur' and top assistant with flashgun at the top of the waterfall saw us all standing still, and were willing us to move to get out of the way; odd?

Just be aware when using the Household insurance option as a friend of mine had an accident with her camera (falling into a duck pond actually) and the insurance company actually did a bit of googleing and found their portfolio online and decided it was a business item and didn't pay out.

Wether you make money from it or not, if it looks like you do then you do seems to be the policy of some insurers
