"reasonable force"

In most instances this would consist of the owner shouting "Stop breaking into my car" and the thief running off. Any more force than this in the circumstances would be an assault by the car owner.

I'm struggling to see how a sign stating this would help.

A common myth, that has little basis in fact.  In reality, reasonable force can quite legally be used to stop a crime in progress.

That doesn't stop you getting knifed though does it.

My uncle (a caver) once caught two miscreants cutting their way into the vinyl sunroof of his car. He hurt them so badly with his bare hands his wife suggested they had to leave rather than call the cops. So that was the end of it.

Them were the days. Vinyl sunroofs that is.

Is shopping allowed just in case? Purely from a self defence point of view of course.
