Car Broken into on the old Mam Tor Road near Treak Cliff Cavern!

A friend of mine had there car broken into on the old Mam Tor Road in Castleton last night while it was parked outside Treak Cliff Cavern. They wasn't caving, they actually work at the cavern. Lots of damage was done to the car and they stole some items from the car also.

I'm mentioning this on here, to make cavers aware that thieves are back in the area, assuming that they left in the first place.

Speaking to a few people today it appears that this area is a hotspot currently. A suspect white van with green lettering has been present on at least 2 occasions.
I was parked directly opposite Treak Cliff this afternoon whilst in Suicide. It was a very busy day today with people walking and driving past frequently yet I managed to pick up 2 crowbar dents in the side door of my van and someone tried to force the handle. They didn't get in as she's like Fort Knox and damage was very minimal but it was broad daylight.
Be careful out there and don't give them a target.
Also, if anyone saw them, give me a number-plate so I can introduce them to my crowbar.

Bugger meant to be in Castleton in a few weeks. Is there any secure parking in the town?

Plenty of car parking in town, pay and display in the centre, a bit of on street parking if you turn up early enough (pre 9am), it just seems to be the more remote parking areas - Treak Cliff, Giants, Blue John, occaisionally Speedwell that seem to attract the more neanderal of society.

The local patrol car is often up there on their daily rounds, but obviously they can't be everywhere at once.

A couple of years ago, a group of us clambered out of the Odin entrance in darkness, and were just negotiating the 'tree-trunk slide' part of the gorge when we were hit by a massive searchlight from the road! We could barely see with that in our faces, and had great difficulty climbing down - it was clearly cops but we couldn't work out what they were doing. Martyn ran over when we got down, and the cop told him that he'd seen us coming out, and was trying to help us out with more light! ;)

If you're in the village for a drink, ask the landlord if he minds you leaving the car in their car park, The Bull, The Peaks and The Cheshire Cheese used to be O.K. with this if you bought enough beer.

Knowing how much beer you and a certain sheep farmer used to see off I'm surprised they didn't roll out the red carpet when you showed up!

If this event is happening regularly, it suggests a sting operation might pay off, though I guess it could turn ugly quite easily! But a video with activity and a registration number in it would do just as much good as a punch-up in the long run. Plenty of places to hunker down with a flask around there...
