what' available to explore around here that isn't a paid tourist trip? it seems theres alot of commercial activity around which is fine, but anything good for independent cavers?

Depends how close to 'here' you mean? If you include Blaenau in your 'here' you've got Cwmorthin, Rhosydd, Wrysgan, Croesor for a start.
