fine if you know someone with a copy and access to a photocopier but not really a long term solution for the masses.

Well it looks like its going to get done. Going to have a meeting with a publisher on friday hopefully.

Some suggestions and questions with regards this new or re-released COTPD guide that will be coming up in some form or other ( :D ):

a) SamT - are you fronting this project, or just making enquiries about publishing/ re-publishing?

b) Is it worth adding a 'COTPD' section to the forum? From what I have gathered in the posts so far, this project looks as though it is going to benefit by input from a variety of sources and individual clubs/ cavers. Whoever does front the project could post requests for particular information or delegate tasks to project volunteers (I for one would gladly give my free time in assisting on this). It could also be an area for updates on how the project is progressing.

c) Having never seen a copy of the COTPD, what kind of layout in content are we looking at? Would it be similar to Iain Barker's CCOTPD - location, history, access, description and where possible, rigging guides/ information?

I think the idea of a project like this is a brilliant one and will give other cavers/ clubs the opportunity to put something more into British Caving than just the odd caving trip every weekend, or so.

:D

cheers.

First some history -

"caves of the peak district" was first written in 1964 by Trevor Ford. It was then re-written and printed in 1984 by I think - Trevor and John Beck (someone will correct me if Im wrong). Then again in 1991 by John Beck and Dave Gill. COTPD went out of print and then to fill the gap - Iain Barker produced Classic caves of the peak - based on the same style of COTPD.

Would it be similar to Iain Barker's CCOTPD - location, history, access, description and where possible, rigging guides/ information?

well it will be in the same style as the 1991 guide upon which Iains book was based. There is a debate as to whether of not to include rigging, as details of this can change regularly and may therefore be left to a peak rigging guide or some such.

a) SamT - are you fronting this project, or just making enquiries about publishing/ re-publishing?

As it stands at the moment I suppose yes - Im 'heading up' the project. Its always been compiled on behalf of DCA and therefore I will be working closely with them during the re-write.
At the moment I'm waiting to hear from Cordee but hopefully they will be interested in publishing it.

Once that is established - I want to get together with a few of the key players so to speak and decide how to proceed. Find out whats missing/incorrect from the old guide. then get a team of volunteers together to check details etc.

I know that 'current' knowledge from the Dove,Manifold catchment is lacking so a clue as to who to contact from that area would be great.

Is it worth adding a 'COTPD' section to the forum? Dont know about a whole forum but I will hopefully be using this site as an area for input.

Cheers, when the time comes, I will probably be looking for folks to go out and check details.

:D

PS

the new guide will have photos (unlike 1991) so any photographers out there - put aside your best shots so they can be imortalized in print. 8)
