Caving Alone

I think "dishonesty" is a bit harsh - we have no idea what is being researched....and if research had been mentioned in the first post I imagine the thread would have progressed in a similar way.

OK, point taken. I've edited my post accordingly.

I dunno - if, for example, he had started 'I'm writing a book and one of my characters is a caver ...' the thread might have been very different .... it might even have been more helpful to him

To help with this blokes research maybe some lady members could provide some piccys of their caving exploits, just so he gets an idea- preferably ones with the yellow PVC underwear featured.....

Could make his book quite interesting, assuming its something like that.

tt.

p.s. sorry, just couldn't resist.

Same theme, slightly different angle. When underground as a (small) group, if you enter a 'new' area you've never been to before, do you:

* explore all potential passages as a group.
* split into twos/threes and explore passages to see which potentially 'go' and which are blind around the next corner.
* split up individually to go solo and see which passages 'go' and which are blind

(BTW: No research, just an interesting thread!)

Pick an "extreme" pastime. Find out what is "off limits" and then ask people if they've ever done any of the "off limits" stuff. Discover that nearly everyone has but each say you shouldn't. A case of "Do as I say, not as I do" perhaps?
Also another way of highlighting the hypocrisy of the human condition.

Quite possibly.

The general advice, that needs no further explanation is "Never go underground alone". Beyond that are a whole host of conditions when it may be acceptable given certain circumstances and experience. It's generally easier just to say 'not recommended'

That depends on the passage, doesn't it?

Dry, interesting looking crawl - we all go
Wet crawl early on in trip - probably we all go
Flat out wet crawl late in trip - one of us goes
Muddy tube - I go (I like mud)
Wet bedding plane with less than 4 inches air space and no reason to believe what's beyond it is worthwhile - forget that!

Yes I am. I would try to put anyone off it really.

Those who are going to solo-cave still will, but I don't want it to be seen as an acceptable norm as there are often less experienced people reading this forum who might not realise the potential dangers of such an activity.

True... I figure I have enough experience behind me to take it on but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to the less experienced.

actually a stream flowing down a bedding with 4 " air space sounds good - can we build a dam. Hmm - maybe divert the stream somewhere else in the cave........

Good point. Only ever solo trips I've done a gazillion times... although there was that time in Sell Gill and that other time in Bull Pot and that time...
