Cliff Cavern Ropes

Personally I feel the whole process of approval etc takes far to long, meanwhile people are caving on dodgy gear while the committee decide if its worth bolting or not.

A supply of 316 SS hangers are now in DCAs possession, it will be done soon, see above also for JPs post for more info. Nothing to do with a committee, more to do with a supply of suitable hangers that have been tested and found to be satisfactory. Be patient...

Yes please! I do want to have a better look at all that stuff - it's a very interesting area. And obviously Viccy Aven itself, but I know there's concerns about the stability of the top ledge into Elephant's Head Chamber. I have volunteered to help on any remedial work that might need, but I'm unsure how far discussions with the Peak management have progressed - if at all.

Update on the Cliff Cavern bolting:

All equipment, BP-bolts, resin, etc. and other kit are now in the hands of the installers.  They were going to do it last weekend but were defeated by the high water levels so the job will be done just as soon as conditions permit.

DCA Hon. Sec.

Just to let everyone know that the bolting of Cliff Cavern using the new BP bolts has now been completed.  All the records of the work are now being entered into the DCA bolting database.

Note that DCA does not have any input or responsibility for any ropes which may be attached to the bolts - DCA itself does not instal or maintain fixed ropes.

Fabulous news - many thanks to all involved, especially considering the water levels in there recently. Will there be a topo/description available at some point?

I assume any topo description will appear in due course on the Peak Cavern website - that's where all the other topos for the Peak/Speedwell system are.

if some one wants to pm me an email address i will email you a topo to post here but i cant work out how to embed a 4mb file or be bothered to tidey up the drawing so i can make it in to a smaller file.

on the description front

head up the only rope from the floor  pass hanging re-belay and bad but unessential deviation
at next y hang make your choice:
right along hanging traverse to cliffhanger
straight up single rope to the original root to puzzling evidence (on original botls and rope 1980's  ) if you do this can you de-rig it and take the ropes home to your wheel bin
left and up a bit on Tirolean too puzzling evidence utilising the nice new dca bolts.

there is plenty of slack in the assent line of the Tirolean and both ends are rigging so u can abseil one side and ascend the other if you want.

at the top of here there is a traverse that will make those with a bad kit set up or poor technique sweat a little if they have not already.

on that note yes this bit of cave is not safer than it was but it is still not an easy trip and the rope work up there dose involve more than a lot of the SRT you find in uk so if reading this and looking at the topo that might turn up here you think you dont know what your doing then do some more learning first.

I have over drawn (badly) HROCKS topo to make it hopefully easier to view and also uploaded the original underneath that one

good work thats great thank you.

i like how you have even managed to remove the rub point on the top pitch. Unfortunately i suspect the rope in the cave still rubs but they dont need to know that till they get there.

Finally got to visit the place the other day! Thanks to everyone involved for their efforts, couldn?t have been easy rigging that monstrous tyrolean

Managed to see as far as both sumps at either end, quite spectacular all-round. Cliffhanger passage especially, looks like a bomb?s gone off in a boulder factory.

What a shame it hasn?t revealed any big breakthroughs, the place is so big, you feel there must be something more to find up there. But I imagine everything?s been thoroughly ticked off over the years. Is it looking like Western Highway might pop up somewhere along joint effort? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Just one thing, as Henry suggests it is (just about) possible to do a 'rope 2 rope' and abseil then climb the other end up to joint effort, but if you do this you end up ascending the bottom part of the gully with a lot of loose stuff - so best not to.

Top effort everyone. Great to finally see what?s up there  (y)
