Cockshead Mine Covered over Filled in?

Has anyone been down Cockshead Mine that can remember where it is? Supposedly it was covered with a metal sheet I have heard this from several sources, However this could just be a rumour and it may have been filled in? It would be very interesting if it could be located.

I spent some time looking for that in the late 70s, without success. I had a rough idea of which hillock it was in but I don't remember coming across a steel sheet.

The most useful reference I came across is Dave Elliott's "Caves Of Northern Derbyshire" Part 1; The Eldon Hill Area (Jan 1975) pages 1 & 2. This includes a useful elevation and also a location map. It gives the location as "about 200 yds west of Bull Pit (NGR107814) and around 15 yds south of the B6061 Sparrowpit/Castleton road. This also tells us that it was formerly known as "SP Mine by potholers. (So searching for this, as well as Cockshead Mine, in caving publications may be useful?)

There are further references given in this article, the most useful of which will probably be:

Chandler B, 1953, British Caver V24 pp 73-75 (inc surveys)

Ford T D, 1966, BSA Cave Science 39 (p382).

Dave Elliott's reference list (in his CoND article above) includes "Speleogation Records" - as do many other entries in the 5 part series. I've often wondered what these Speleogation Records consist of; they may include a lot of interesting stuff. I bump into Dave now and again so I'll ask him next time I see him. (Or - Dave - if you read this, can you enlighten us?)

You could try asking Trevor Ford directly? (Best method likely to be by letter, with an SAE enclosed.)

TDF also mentions that it was '30m SW of the gate', if that helps at all with the triangulation? I'll see if I can get hold of Paul C too,

That doesn't help with triangulation, as 200 yards west of Bull Pit is East of the current gate.

However using the Stockport Cavers article from 1954 it seems to agree that Cockshead is South West of the gate, making it ~260yr from Bull Pit direct.

Looks like there's a fair bit of fog at Perryfoot right now - all I can see is grey....

If Paul Chandler's at the UCF meeting tonight, I'll mention to him that people are asking about the location of Cockshead mine. Looking on the old OS maps, there's a shaft marked directly south of Bull Pit, but nothing futher west south of the road

Well Bull pit is presently being dug By Eddie Masson and Nick Williams (on P8 farmers Land) Eddie thought he would have no problem obtaining permission if he thought we had located it. The street map I have just looked at puts it right where I thought it was to. There is a raised area at the back of the field by the fence with a row of stones along the edge of the Hillock, I think it is the very likely to be the shaft, it is also the correct distance from the road. If a shaft is filled in it normally settles leaving a depression and that area is depression free.

Hasn't Bob D got a metal detector.

However, there is probably a load of old metal kicking around those fields - so could be a hindrance  rather than a help, though you may find some interesting artefacts along the way.
