Very sad news. I always thought of him as a youngster. Surely gone before his time. RIP

That's lousy news; Denis was a good bloke, a dynamic character and a hard caver. Very sad to learn this but thanks for letting us all know.

Hard to believe that Denis has gone, he was one of the fittest people I've known. I gave him a lift back from the Berger in '94 and arriving back at my housie in Hellifield crashed out for a sleep after a long drive promising Denis I would drive him in to Skipton where he had left his car. Waking up a couple of hours later, I discovered he had decided to walk to Skipton down the A65, about 10 miles, to get his car; a measure of the man.

Exactly
Denis has for ever young thing about him
Unfortunately he had to have a liver transplant 7yrs ago and it started to let him down.
He used to joke I'll knock a young person of there bike and drive up to Leeds where they do liver transplants

Every time we stayed at Hugh's place, above the Bourne Gorge, Denis would be out before breakfast for a few km.

Then there was the time in Crete when he stumbled into the hotel dining room looking the worse for wear. "I had an argument with a bear!". It was dark and wet and he had missed the entrance gate and hit the barbed wire. Then if we got onto the caving tales ...........

I knew him as "bouncing bushell". On the Berger in 94 he climbed a 50 ft pitch ahead of me without attachment to his ascenders. He had just presented me with two stuffed sacks of rope in addition to those i carried. Near the top he fell off, i think he forgot his foot jammer wasnt attached when he took off the chest. Seeing the plummeting caver i threw the rope bags down and swiftly sidestepped. Bushell hit them side on and rolled off down the steep slope like a parachutist.
He immediately stood up, ran back to the rope and re-ascended, this time dissapearing towards camp one, leaving me to haul 4 sacks. We never discussed this event......

Every time I met Dennis, he would connect with everyone, this engagement would immediately have people laughing, a very pleasant solid character, I miss his loving smile.
I was intending to join and help him on his excavation at the foot of one of the Coniesdale Pots, sadly that will not now happen.
Bye Dennis been good knowing and sharing some of life's journey with you bro.
