First car boot sale of the year.

4 pairs of digging gloves for ?6.

Unfortunately quite quiet on sellers and no wellies, crow bars, lump hammers or chisels this week.

Nice tip Sam
Good to hear that rather than protecting your hands from gritty ropes whilst abseiling using a glove you have come up with the cunning plan to protect the gloves as hands are way more expendable.
Next time we meet I would like to shake your hand for that one, but only if there's enough left.

Sorry couldn't resist!!!!
Skin does generally heal and grow back too!

What an interesting read, great to see what other people are using!
I find the generic thin builders gloves completely useless, they will last me roughly one trip. With no digging.

My glove choice is guided by two factors, a) I've always had digs that required a fair bit of SRT, and I hate even slightly baggy or bulky gloves; b) I tend to overheat and cold hands are never really a problem for me. The obvious choice for me is therefore a tight fitting knitted level 5 cut resistant gloves (i.e. high EN388 ratings) at somewhere around ?5 a pair, less in bulk.
They last me somewhere from 10-20 trips. Tried a variety from more expensive Kevlar ones, with PU cover, without cover, etc. and would say there's little in it. That is, the more expensive ones last a little longer, but not substantially so. They invariably fail between the thumb and index finger on your breaking hand after a relatively short time, rest of the glove stays useful for much, much longer.
The most annoying thing about that hole is it allows grit/ smaller rocks to get into the glove, which is a pain.

Actually reminded me that I'm in need of a new pair, and found some suspiciously cheap ones here https://www.safetygloves.co.uk/portwest-a622g7-level-5-cut-resistant-pu-coated-gloves.html
[Disclaimer: I'm no shill for Portwest or that website]

Only ever used nitrile gauntlet type gloves when I still worked in a lab an could... err... liberate them from the workplace. They were ok considering the price point, but I disliked the slipperiness.

We've got some of those Portwest ones on this job and they appear to be a clone of the 'Warrior' gloves which are awesome and cost twice as much:

One company gives these out for every single job but I haven't worked for them for a while - dammit. I haven't used these Portwest ones as they always get size 9s for jobs which are too small for me, and the job's too fiddly anyway, so I'm wasting money using my own Contour Avengers. They're not really suitable for digging, but for general caving I haven't found anything better in terms of the balance between toughness and thinness. Condoms for your hands ;)
