Digging, Things that should be looked at again ?

Topic revived again :)

Petra's cave in Eldon Quarry- the amount of waterworn rock above Petra's on some of the levels above is reasonably good. whether Petra's is a continuation of these (sadly now lost to quarrying) or another cave feeding into natural beyond.
(It's also a reasonably easy evening dig, drag trays already in from the credit crunchers, and only 5 or so minutes from the car) Infinite stacking space in the quarry.

Wormhill...

A mate & I ventured up the dale behing the springs along time ago, looking for likely spots to do some earth-moving. Someone had been digging a likely looking spot partway up the dale, 1/2 - 2/3s way up the left hand slope. Don't know how that turned out. We moved a bunch of rock out of another entrance, again on the left, near the head of the dale (does a footpath cross there?).

Hi Cryptic,

I think you're referring to the cross in Red in flag dale on the Path, I will have to do a bit of Searching, but this keeps cropping up on this forum, it's at the bottom end of the Nature Conservation zone, with the Area updale (north West) being strictly off limits to everyone.
The blue Cross is another interesting dig site, i'll get back later, but it's on the upper end of the conservation zone (just inside the fence).

We dug that in the early 60's. Iirc it connects with something in Flag Dale which maybe part mined, part natural just around the corner so to speak.

Imho modern digging techniques would repay.

Linen Dale cave , if you can get access.

I've edited this out - because was reading map incorrectly...

Approximations...

The red cross is where we pulled some out - as I recall it was a rift with a crawl in, opened out to standing height inside. Deads stacked along the left wall.

Blue cross - was a dig under a hawthorn bush into a step in the dale side - no idea how that worked out - didn't ever have a look inside.

We had aspirations of dropping into something behind the springs.

When I had a look at "blue cross" it looked like it had promise and when viewed after some  snow did not appear to have as much as the surrounding area. Would need permission though.

Out of interest - where would that permission come from?

I did some digging at Linen Dale too, many years ago. At that point, it looked very much like the entrance crawl had arrived at a pot full of glacial till.

Anyone know if any further work was done?

Let's not forget that old fave 'impossible dig' high up on the hill above Speedwell, which remarkably is still going, after nearly three years continuous work - we hope to be through by the end of summer. Though as with all construction projects in Great Britain, deadlines should always be taken with a pinch of salt...

I think It was Slack (or shack) hole, not to be confused with a hole on slackhole scrin.

It's the big monster shakehole south of JH Entrance. see the L shaped field in the centre of the OS map, the Hole is the shakehole marked in the bottom of the L.

That's the one, is it still being dug? I heard a lot of people talking about it back in 09/10 but not heard anything since.

Not that i'm aware of, he's digging in transition tube at the moment and making a great job of it. Crawled to the end about 2months ago and was quite impressive!
Heading, west, at the bottom of cliff cavern.

When was the last time anyone dug above Cohesion Sump?

I remember Norman Flux digging in there but it was a long time ago.

I've had a good look at the avens at the tops of all the slopes in this part of the cave but not the bottoms. I think the sump is blocked with mud at a reasonable depth, 20m springs to mind, I don't have a guidebook in front of me and I seem to remember somebody saying the underwater passage size being quite roomy. I bet Pitlamp will be able to confirm.

This is a very interesting part of Peak Cavern, if you don't mind a lot of flat out crawling.
