digging

Every now and again one stumbles across a new hole with the tell tail signs off spoil and shoring in various states of decay, indicating an old abandoned ? dig. Now, more than likely a lot of effort went into that particular hole with no reward(which is often the case). Would it not be a good idea to have a list of such sites to inform future generations of cavers to what has been done , the problems encountered, the potential of the site and the prospects for future work. Most diggers having given up on a particular site would only be more than happy to know that another group will continue where they left off and carry on their good work. If a breakthrough was to come the original diggers would be satisfied that they had some part in the opening of a new system and due recognition could be made to them.

Good point speleo.. (are you talking about surface or underground digs?)

What about other areas... Is anything similar occuring in the Dales, Mendip, Wales, etc???

The problem with digs is they tend to be secretive affairs revealed to only a select few - unless this attitude is changed then the worth of such lists is pointless (diggers have a secretive nature, even if they don't visit their dig site for weeks/months/years etc) - I've found/stumbled across a significant number of holes/digs that I've never seen mentioned anywhere!

why spoil it for future generations.
If one group says "we digged here, didnt get anywhere" whats to say someone else cant get something out of it.
If people wanted to document digs the best place would be the local caving group as digging would deffo need someones approval.

Heres my groups digging page. Not all digs are listed.
