Why would you tell the landowner about a dig? It is like approaching my mother and saying "Is it ok, if we just take the brake pipes off your car for this evening and put them back on tomorrow?" Of course she will get very very very upset. "Can we have access to the system" is enough. I wonder if the people perpetrating this kind of activity are deliberately causing a massive stir, in order to favour their own situation.

Secret is bad. Secret is bad for caving and bad for cavers. We do enough skulking in the dark without that kind of shenanigans.

Secret is not open. Known to the select few is not open. Equally accessible to any responsible caver is the only acceptable access. Sometimes this will mean no access, but this is a price worth paying.

Another pool of righteous bores are those who are convinced they know it all, and have no issue with telling everyone at every available opportunity. Woe betide anyone who challenges them.

Given that's aimed at me, let's get this crystal clear, so even you can't misunderstand.

I don't know it all. I've never suggested I do. Now, if you would like to keep it on topic and not be a righteous bore by dragging this off topic. You want to take pot shots at me, take it to my inbox, m'kay?

Righteous bore could also be translated as 'people who  like to get it right'.

I like to be correct. I don't submit items (decidedly non-caving) unless they are correct to the best of my knowledge and ability. It was more aimed at the general attitude of Editors (again, sweeping generalisation, not universal) I've observed.
