Exclusive BCA newsletter preview: new entrance to Ogof Draenen

As David states, we would rather avoid legal action if possible but are good to go if need be. Twll Du has been open for over a year and bats have been seen there. Hence, precisely the same parameters apply as for Drws Cefn: if NRW grant a bat licence in order to enable the entrance to be blocked to cavers, we will immediately invoke a judicial review. We believe we would win.

As Badlad says, if the discovery of such a superb entrance into the longest system in Wales is not 'proper' caving then I don't know what is. Make no mistake, this is far and away the most aesthetically pleasing entrance into Ogof Draenen: in fact, I can think of few better in all of South Wales. It really annoys me when people deliberately seek to belittle the efforts of the discoverers, particularly when it is someone like Pitlamp who really should know better. Cavers will be enjoying and reaping the benefit of this fine piece of exploration for many years to come: the boys who found it deserve a massive vote of thanks from all of us for their brilliant dedication and sheer hard work!

Pitlamp has a point.

CRoW is irrelevant. Despite the *rarely cited* intervention of his sister, the status of caving RE CRoW has still not been decided by anyone other than the BCA.

Might be better to discuss what we have rather than what we wish we had, though I recognise it as a journalist's anathema.

In case it helps;

For NigR - the last thing I would ever do is "belittle" anyone's caving endeavour, believe me. It's just that I'd prefer to read more about the discovery itself, rather than the minutiae of various access issues.

For David Rose - thanks for your clarification, which is helpful.
(I never used the word "boring" - note.) At least two items on your list are certainly of direct interest to me. As and when there's anything I can usefully contribute I'd be very happy to support your efforts with the BCA Newsletter of course.

For Badlad - it's all about balance - see comment above, for NigR. I hope this helps you understand my sentiments.

Must admit, I do miss the former Caves & Caving.

These are tough times for print media. Being a journalkist and all, don't i know it! Over at UKClimbing, I see the excellent magazine Climb has just folded altogether, having moved from print to digital for just one month. I miss Caves and Caving too. It published one of my first articles anywhere, about the 1980 Pozu del Xitu trip. It ain't coming back.

One reason I don 't want to compete with other caving media is that I truly appreciate the incredible work Chris and Judith put into Descent. We are lucky to have it, and I urge everyone who uses this forum to ensure they have an up to date subscription. Long may it continue.

Excellently put - and I couldn't agree more!

I read this sort of thing and it is a very good job I am not the landowner. I would dynamite a good 100m length of each entrance, just to stop this playgroup toy-grabbing nonsense. Because that's what it is.

Why would you tell the landowner about a dig? It is like approaching my mother and saying "Is it ok, if we just take the brake pipes off your car for this evening and put them back on tomorrow?" Of course she will get very very very upset. "Can we have access to the system" is enough. I wonder if the people perpetrating this kind of activity are deliberately causing a massive stir, in order to favour their own situation.

I would have loved to (and still would like to - one day) visit Milwr. I read the Grosvenor Caving Club shenanigans with similar vitriol. Utter utter idiocy and virtually nothing to do with caving, apart from the nonsense relates to a cave.

The Milwr is, access wise at least, easy enough. Don't bother with the GCC, you'll get nowhere. Give me a prod and I'll point you in the right direction.

You may now resume your regularly scheduled Draenen thread.

If more people put effort into getting stuff printed and less writing lengthy pieces on the forum editors of journals would be really happy people. An Editor ;)

Love a lengthy forum post of quality but recently there have been superb print media caving releases.

I find editors to be righteous bores (Sweeping generalisation, not all are), and I suspect others finding the same are the reason you have less submissions, with the internet ruling the roost now.

Well I suppose I do both. I have just written up 1,000 words for the club magazine and have stuff in most of them over the last few years. Magazines are collected and swapped  to be used as references and kept in club libraries. The forum is more along the lines of chat ( and argue ) in the pub. Forums also have the ability to host more images if only people bothered. There is room for both and I cant see one detracts from the other. As for Facebook ------ :cautious:
In any case where exactly in the system is this new entrance supposed to be? Something like a sketch survey would be most helpful. A link to a website or what ever have you.

Hmm! I find the internet to be something of a shouting match although use it all the time. In my professional life I had to advise patients they needed to sieve out the crap when researching ailments, a point well made on the Today programme this morning. Print still has permanence. I am sure Chris Howes would find the term righteous bore a sweeping generalisation :) Righteous bore could also be translated as 'people who  like to get it right'.

Another pool of righteous bores are those who are convinced they know it all, and have no issue with telling everyone at every available opportunity. Woe betide anyone who challenges them.
