Fallen tree at Gaping Gill

There was much ado over recent weeks about the fallen tree at Jingling Pot. It seems there may have been another casualty of the recent Storm Arwen; that nice rowan on the lip of GG is down and hanging into the shaft. It's not as big as the Jingling tree but still needs careful handling to get it out safely. Anyone fancy dealing with this? Here's a picture of the tree this morning and another picture showing how it looked a few years ago.

Shame... :(  I wondered if it had been dead for a bit, but looking back to end Aug last year it looked like it was healthy/happy back then. Normally they can get roots deep into cracks and be really secure... I've belayed off ones like that in the past without worrying excessively, sobering thought!

Leave it. Clearly still attached at the roots. Or the water will take it next time it gets stormy...

It looked like a tree had fallen across Rumbling (Leck) when we passed last week too - I wasn't 100% sure though as I can't remember it from previous times...maybe someone else could confirm. Will try snap a pic next time if not, had no camera on me last week.

We've had an offer from someone qualified and insured for this kind of work, to whom thanks!

It might be useful to point out that there a couple of serious belay spikes on the moor directly above the tree, used for the guide wire for the BPC winch, at least.

Well, I just tried to post a snap of the entrance to Rumbling Hole but got the following message:

Your attachment has failed security checks and cannot be uploaded. Please consult the forum administrator.

This has happened several times recently ? what am I doing wrong? (I clicked on Attachments and other options, chose the appropriate image, and clicked post; the snap is a jpeg / 599 x 680 pixels.)

I had this a few weeks ago as well. Not tried since, but would be good to know why.

Thanks Alan - yes; good point. I'm not sure they're directly in line though but quite possibly useful.

2XW suggested leaving the tree but if it were to dislodge whilst anyone is in the shaft or chamber below, potentially bringing soil and rocks with it, the consequences could be serious. The estate has been informed and it looks like this problem will be dealt with fairly soon.

Not quite above / in line, but not far off. Click on the photo to enlarge. They are at the top of the wire cable leading from the gantry.

Fulk, seems a common problem to the forum and those like it. I thought it was because you were uploading a jpeg not a jpg but they are both accepted extensions now and if it is too large a file then it would give that error.

I find that anything above about 2MB seems to fail for a jpg. If I cut down a 5MB to 2MB it goes from not working to OK. This is not what the instructions say.

Well, I just tried to upload it as a tif, and got the following message:

Rumbling Hole entrance.tif.
You cannot upload that type of file. The only allowed extensions are gif, jpg, jpeg, pdf, png.

Incidentally, it's 971.1 kb. So jpg should have been OK.
