None of the active moderators stand to earn a penny from advertising, so why would we bother?

There isn't excessive moderation. The only person who is on "approved posts" is you because despite being asked many, many times to stop blogging news links, you just carry on regardless.

This not-frequently-posting but regular visitor to the site would just like to be more able to see the sensible posts about caves and caving (and the occasional Slug/Stupot stitch-up) in between the endless stream of political agenda driven drivel, which sadly needs moderating with extreme prejudice*, and the output of posters who seem unable to let a single post by anyone else go by without responding, no matter how much of a non sequitur that response may be.

* I'm perfectly happy with the job the moderators currently do, thanks for asking.

Peter, you just don't get it, do you.

It's not about whether there is sufficient bandwidth for everyone, it's about having respect for other people's point of view. It's about giving people space to express themselves without them feeling that every time they take time and trouble to craft what they believe to be a well considered post someone is going to come along a trivialise it with an irrelevant comment about punctuation or spelling. It's about keeping your mouth shut so that people who care very much about caving and would like to be able to discuss it with friends, but who also have other important things to do with their lives, can post without having to devote time and thought to responding to people with mental diarrhoea.

You are the equivalent of the bore in the pub who has an opinion on everything and cannot resist the temptation to inflict on anyone who is unfortunate enough to be within earshot. Do yourself and everyone else a favour and STFU once in a while.

Nick.

  very well said Nick

As an infrequent contributor to threads, (.017 per day) perhaps gaining a fuller understanding what readers, who are not the big contributors, are looking for when visiting the Forum and what they are seeking.

I have dared to post on occasion but only when I have felt that I have something to give that adds to the discussion and I try not to provoke abuse/ a slagging off.

In two years of being in the UK caving Forum but not a newbie to caving. I read the Forum now at the end of most days, by clicking straight to 'unread posts since last visit' and reading whatever thread title takes my interest, it is the fourth account I go to after my personal account, Facebook, work. So UK Caving is part of my daily internet reading habit. I am seeking news, developments and threads that informs my caving activities and that of my club; new equipment reviews, changes in access, breakthroughs, cave conservation/movement. I enjoy the humour (but confess to being worried over Bertie Bats safety)  calls for current expeditions, findings, books, libraries, publications new & old, events; social and informative. I like the contributions by the experts on cave topics. But mostly the immediacy of the postings. I guess I want the Forum to allow me to feel connected to the Caving World so that when I go to the other regions I know whats been happening. Also it has been a point of discussion with caving friends and colleagues especially if the information is a version that you would not read in the news (e.g tells the real story)  I know a lot of the people who contribute to the threads; either personally or reputationally so if I see them posting I will automatically read what they are saying.

Maybe a lot of f the general topic threads are old hat /been done to death/ degeneration to abuse to long term forum users but the forum should also  provide for the forum visitor who is new to caving, who are trying to feel their way into the caving community.

OK I will duck down now....

Come on guys the banter is fun its only when it degenerates into personal rants or use of offensive language which will put people off on all levels. Tony and myself do a bit of mud slinging and it did
degenerate but most of it was slap stick

Peter seems to have  number of people on the run but it seems to be others become personal rather than him or am I wrong?

I'm liking the portal by the way - as now it has unread posts on the right hand side - which saves me one click/page load.
:)

Actually that was an error. The "recent topics" block should only appear on the "Home" page. But if you like them on every page we can enable that ...

Nah - just on the home page. but its nice to arrive there, and be able to see straight away any new/updated topics. (A "mark all Read" button there too would be great, since if there was nothing there that took my fancy, I could just hit one button and be done.

... plus as previously mentioned lets not forget all the past, present, and potential future projects that have got that extra lift through UKC. Lots of good stuff and its easy to skip over the rest.

Don't know if this has been mentioned before ( I don't have time to read the full thread)

What about macking Each persons profile more Personal? Having our own log book to tick off caves done and caves wanting to do and which members we have been caving with. and the option to make it public or keep it privet. have A personal photo album too which can also be made public or kept privet  or just shared with linked Friends on here?

Wow! - that would keep a few people busy for a while, logging all their trips!... :) We could see a phenomenal increase in posting statistics!

Maybe it would keep the more experienced/ senyer caver busy for a while if they chose to do it but for me as a new caver it would be good to keep track of where and when i went and i guess it would also be helpfull to see who's been where, when asking for advice on a certain trips?

Surely this is a good constructive idea rather than Moaning about Moderators like the beginning of this thread (the bit's i red before getting board with it)

FWIW I posted my comments in an up-beat smiley way, even putting exclamation marks and a smiley punctuation face in it. I posted approval, as I saw it, considering it to be a constructive idea indeed. No moaning or whinging was in mind so I'm totally bewildered where on earth you got that weird idea from. Bad hair day?

Indeed, SamT! - but the use of the word "surely" in the final paragraph puts a different context on things, insofar as it suggests that my previous comments weren't supportive.

I'm sorry Chris  I wasn't Intending to Insult you or or suggest there is anything wrong with your reply I did see it as supportive (y). The last paragraph wasn't directed at any one in particular. :-[

I did read a little At the beginning of this thread and it seemed like a clash of the moderators.

Am I forgiven? :ang:

One thing that is seriously missing is the ability to upload pictures as part of your post (unless there is a way  I don't know). I don't mean the "img" tags referencing an image on another site, I mean upload to the server from you own PC.

It seems to be a general weakness of most "open source" forums. We have it on the InstantASP forum that I run and it makes reports, trips etc. MUCH more interesting. People use it a lot. Better than pages of words....

For instance, I'd have bunged up a load of Berger pics the other month, but can't be fagged going to Photobucket and copying a bunch or URL's over from one place to another.

I'm guessing it'll be a bandwidth/server space(re cost) issue. Bubs ran this site for a long time out of his own pocket with no commercial interest. Things may be different now, but see something like the DFBWGC thread on UKbouldering. The lack of uploading ability hasn't hindered things like that.

The ability to post images is provided for, and is only hindered by laziness.
Imgur is pretty damned quick to obtain a url link to a photo. You don't even need to register.

I can see how the wiki benfits from uploaded photo's i.e. - no broken links.
