Finishing the job - Bagshawe Cavern - 5th April 08

Another Bagshawe Cavern working day is planned for Saturday 5th April 08 and it would be great to get plenty of cavers along to help. The aim is to complete the casting of the concrete slabs in the roof of the entrance stope to protect the steps from rockfall. We will be mixing concrete on the surface and then using rope or wire tyroleans to transport the concrete to where it's needed in the entrance stope. The concrete will then be poured into the wooden shuttering that's already in place to create the concrete slabs.

Just pop along with caving kit/old warm clothes and decent gloves from 9:00 a.m. If you would like to make a weekend of it bring a sleeping bag and feel free to crash upstairs in the Coe.

Please let us know if you are able to make it. Any questions etc. just get in touch with me or SamT.

Cheers,
Jules.

Anyone fancy lending a hand tomorrow - we'll be there from 9 ish.

Also - some bugger has nicked my custom made kibbles  for lowering the concrete down our zip line.

Anyone coming - if you have any suitable buckets/barrels/kibbles etc - then chuck em in the car.

Cheers

Sam.

Another excellent day on Saturday with a good Eldon turnout plus Big Jim who's on the transfer list! Less time than usual was spent arguing about proportions in the concrete mix which undoubtedly aided progress. Thanks to nickwilliams for delivering kit. Shuttering got finished on two of the five slabs, concrete mixed on the surface by Dave Whiteley, Bob Dearman, Clive Hockenhull and Big Jim and into a number of SamT's Mk4 kibbles built specially for the job. These were delivered down the steps on Dave 'ten men' Cowley's sweeeeet tyrolean where they were unloaded by Dave and Underground. Mr Undergound also providing the gardening-knowledge. SamT, JB and Johnny kibble-wrestling at the business face and two slabs cast by mid-afternoon. All packed up and in the pub for four o'clock.

Plenty more to do with some shuttering and casting concrete slabs lower down. Can't wait...!

Great work Jules and everyone else. You gonna have any photos for me for the cave monitoring web site?

Cheers,
Martin.

Thanks Martin. Unfortunately we didn't have a camera with us on Saturday so no photos. I think all the concrete being thrown around the place made any DSLR?? owners nervous! We'll be doing pretty much the same thing next time so will aim to get some snaps.

Dear Mrs Potts,

Just to let you know that I'm resigning my membership of the Orfulness in favour of a proper club. I have come to realise that my interest in bat conservation will be better served by the Eldon where Mr Underground particularly impressed me with his attitude to bats "what do yer want to encourage bats in there for anyway? ...they're dangerous things them bats!"

Yours to the final bat count,

Big Jim.

Dear Toni

Please se extract of minutes from EPC meeting held at White Hart, Bradwell on Saturday

".....Jules Barrett proposed that Toni Murphy be appointed to post of Club Secretary.  This was seconded by Bob Dearman.  The committee vote was unanimous.... "

I must point out that as an Orpheus (a proper club) member i was not involved with any of the decision making process and did raise my concerns that apointing someone to the post of secretary just cos they were a woman, was perhaps a little non-PC these days and frowned upon by readers of the Guardian and them other posh papers.

I must also point out that my presence on the day was by now means any form of defection from OCC and I was simply there to make sure Mr Underground wasnt putting any bats through the cement mixer as extra ballast.

Regards

Mr Big Jim

(That'll learn ya JB)
