The only time GG is closed so to speak is when the BPC/CPC winch meets are on.
At these times it is controlled by the appropriate clubs on site BUT NOT CLOSED to cavers.

Because caving is not included under the CROW act,  You may legally walk to the entrance (making sure that you check that the land isn't subject to any closure - which the owner may legally do for a certain number of days a year), however when you go underground you are then not entitled to the access under the CROW act.  Bit of a shame but I think that the BCA did lobby hard for access to caves to be included.

Already knew you could access the land but not the cave, although did not know about the ablity to close for a number days but that stands to reason for any number of things which may occur, so really the question should be apart from the landowners wish is there any other reason that the caves have a closed season on the allotment, say conservation or sssi site?

The Countryside Agency told me that that this was their view, but that it needed to be confirmed by a High Court.

Yes it is a real shame about this lack of underground access when you can walk there anytime exept 20 days at the landowners discretion. This 20 days will be abused,becouse unless you are there every day how will you know the 20 days has been used up in any year.There was a big caver lobby but a waste of time because the chap who pushed the legestlation through was anti caver and Welsh.Same chap who wanted to distroy the gorge in Wales where Agi rises with a new road.
Prehaps the time will come or has come to test this out.Not on Fountains Fell though because the land owner pulled out the rope and left anote saying they had not got permmision.

I think the landowner has to register land closures with the national park or council overseeing their area.  By checking http://www.openaccess.gov.uk you can see whether the area that you are interested in is open on a certain date.  Interestingly the site doesn't comment on caving being permitted or otherwise.
