Morning all...
Few of us were thinking about doing a bit of a recky up Ghost Rift on Saturday.

Just wondering if anybody's been up there recently and knows the state of the bolts at the top of the pitch?

-Just to put our minds at ease as we gently prussik up  !!

Cheers

I was up there a couple of years ago and I think it's been re-rigged since? (SamT - weren't you involved in fettling it?) so should be OK.

We had a go at getting to Ghost Rift last nite

Very exciting, went along the crabwalk in serious flood with the water well above the knee :D

The water also rose substancially while we were in there!

Got as far as razor edge cascade, when one who shall remain nameless decided they didnt like

To be fair to him it was quite hairy, "Good Sport"

Suprised on the way back to find the windpipe not sumped, though a little higher than normal

Great fun though not exactly what was planned

Yep - re-arranged the ropes slightly on ghost rift (not replaced) - "should" be ok - but dont sue me.

Bolts are all stainless - but I think there are some steel krabs up the top whick were ok a couple of years back.

Be wary in the choke at the end. There is one car wheel sized block at the top stood on its side holding the whole bloody lot up.

Its a nice little bit of cave up there.

Sounds fun :D /interesting :? /iffy  ..

The survey shows 3 small pitch's at the end - off memory 8m, 2x3m. I'm presuming these are before the choke? Are they bolted or is it o-natural?

Can somebody just clear something up for us here... Went up Ghost Rift series yesterday (bolts are still pretty reasonable :? )....

Is the "Earth Leakage" choke at the end of 9/8th series(little/light/arkward) or at the end of the main passage???

We got about 50m up 9/8th series before thinking it was a bit tedious  and we didn't have our SRT kits dragging behind - so managed to turn around in a bit of a tiny chamber. If its not "Earth Leakage" at the end of 9/8ths... whats at the bottom of the 3 pitchs??

Quoting from Caves of The Peak District (1991)

"46ft (14m) climb leads to the Ghost Rift Series(214m long). The main passage leads to a choke, but before the end a tight awkward passage on the left can be followed to pitches of 8m, 2m, 3m where the way on is too tight but takes a small stream which probably goes to Five Eighths Inlet. Digging in the choke in 1990 led to a very dangerous route up through boulders (The Earth Leakage Trip) to a chamber and an upward continuation of the choke. A passage continues westwards to a further choke and short blocked pitch."

Yep

"earth leakage" is the choke at end of the main passage with the obvious signs of digging (stemples etc). Now blocked awaiting more brave diggers.
(or well equipped diggers).

9/8ths is the side passage - that as dan says - probably ends up at 5/8ths inlet.

clear as mud.

Myself and benM had a look at the choke.

Looks umm interesting. Shoring looked ok but rather basic. Didnt got far into the choke as felt replacing the wood with scaf would be appropiate

is anyone doing this at present?

NAFAIK - I gave it a quick looking over and had some good chats to Mark N and Keith Joule who were the original explorers.

sounds like they broke through into a huge funnel of nastyness - which required a gentle climb up. Quite scary apparently.

It could be that just the bottom of the funnel has run in - an theres not that much digging to do. (then again).

There is a boulder about the size of a car wheel that is stood upright holding everything else back. I think the way forward would be to "remotely" remove that and see what happens.

I think those wooden stemple are probably ok - no sure that scaff would be any more use.

Maybe once the digging started in ernest - then scaff would be good idea.

If you guys are going to do some scaffing, I have a mountain of clamps. We bought 350 off e-bay just before Waterways went, so most of them are still left.

If you lads need tube (48mm presumably) in short lengths (how short in mm?) then give me a bell (Sam will pass my number on).

I'm also onto a massive pile of swivels, doubles, 6m tubes etc. which if it comes off, I intend to store somewhere convenient as a Peak District caver's digging cache. Please don't hold your breaths mind, just in case it all goes to roughage......

Hello there!

Firstly please excuse my ignorance as my knowledge and depth of experience is rather limited! I only recently (6 months or so) got into caving, and can't get enough of it. Exploring caves is the best laugh ever, but what really interests me is trying to figure out how all the various ‘pieces' of a cave and neighbouring caves fit together.

An example of this cropped up on Sunday when a small group of us were down Giant's. I had studied the survey with great interest beforehand, our route was to take us on the regular round trip, but not actually passing through the Windpipe due to a newbie with us. A short way after the turning to Poached Egg Passage, just before the heavily calcited chamber at the entrance to the Windpipe, there was a small hole probably a foot in diameter in the left hand side of the passage at about waist level. It is just big enough to stick your head in. There is a howling draught inwards and in the distance the sound of running water. The small passage heads immediately downwards, but upon further study of the survey, there isn't any other (known) passage below. The Crabwalk would be the source of the noise that springs to mind, but that is a long way from this position.

Any ideas??????

Good avatar -  ;)

Not sure where you mean - on the left as you were heading back down hill - or on the left going uphill before you got to the windpipe  :-\
