Capping/fencing/securing the 5 shafts on Fawcett rake over the wall from here is on my DCA projects radar soonish and I'd be very keen to hear more about this Boggards Roaring Hole, never come across this reference before.

I've heard of it, but it's not in CoPD...

If you have a look on Google Earth there's a blue car more or less marking the spot?

Robert Barber at Maskhill Mine had a total of 19 meers granted by the Barmaster in 1790, which would have left him 3 meers (96 yards) short of the road according to an article by Chris Heathcote, though plotting this on Google Earth seems to take it a little closer. Whether these 19 meers were actually mined is another matter, as most of it now seems to be purely vertical, within the founder meer only, but it suggests that at least some horizontal workings within the Maskhill title must have been anticipated, if not mined.

So it would seem that Boggard Hole would occupy some of the remaining space between the end of the Maskhill title and the road. The only Boggard Hole I'd heard of is at the west end of Moss Rake, near its termination. I do remember someone once pointing out that crater as 'interesting' though.

Obviously there's previous for mines in this area breaking out in to natural but I rather think that any effort would be better trying to get into boggards roaring hole on the other side of the road.

Moose, where is the original of the Barmaster's map that this extract has come from, is it at Chatsworth or did you get it from somewhere else? I see there's a pencilled note in the area of the new collapse but I can't make it out from the jpeg so I'd like to have a look at the original. Also, has anyone ever looked at the depression annotated as "Snow Hole Pipe Work" which suggests the miners had found something natural....

Yes, going by the fact it's been bound into a volume I'm guessing it's one of the ones at Chatsworth - is that the case?  Incidentally, in correspondence with Eli Simpson, John Mort mentioned the existence of a mine called "Snow Ball" in the Middle Hill area which I suspect would be one and the same as Snow Hole.

I think this map actually belongs to me, It was one of several I got from John Clarke who used to be in the BSA at Castleton.

I lent it to John Beck to scan, I think he still has it and this is a scan  (they weren't in very good condition)

If I remember correctly the words say "snow hole, pipe works"

From the Buxton Weather website: http://www.buxtonweather.co.uk/

ROAD CLOSED - The road from the Wanted Inn in Sparrowpit, to the top of the Winnants Pass above Castleton.  This road is closed until March 2015(!), because of a sink hole that has swallowed up a section of wall and part of the road, just after the old quarry site at Eldon Hill.  The alternative route, is from Chapel-en-le-Frith, via Rushup edge to Castleton. (Thank you John Hartley, of Cambion Ltd in Castleton)

Been up there today, dead easy to drive past, nothing to move.

A mate's been for a look today, apparently could still hear stuff rumbling and moving below and cracks still developing on surface.

I thought Faucet rake was further south , running through Maskhill & Oxlow roughly parallel to the road.

Lead Mining in Derbyshire Vol1 puts Faucet Rake running bang on the hole.  Admittedly it doesn't show all the rakes, but a major rake like Faucet may have runners.

Just for info, the 1975 1:25000 geological map covers this area and is available on line at http://www.largeimages.bgs.ac.uk/iip/mapsportal.html?id=1003925
(It shows Fau(c/s?)et Rake changing name to Horsestones Rake north of Rowter Farm)

You mean this one?

It does, indeed show Faucet rake turning into Horsestones rake, it also suggests that the 'Credit Crunch' shaft is on New Rake, not Faucet as previously conjectured.

BTW, anyone know anything about the 'Entrance to tunnel' at the top of Winnats, marked on this map?

Looks more like Speedwell than the top of Winnats to me.
Hmmm, looks like Speedwell is where it indicates Speedwell on the map. Where as 'Entrance to tunnel' is somewhat to the west and as stated, at the top of Winnats. Interesting.

depends which end of the phrase you think indicates where the tunnel is. Could be the other side of Winnats?

Just checked: in Jim's book it's on the North side of Winnats (left as you're descending) about half way down the slope.
