Hidden Earth Stomp - whats going on?

I no longer cave in a wetsuit in every cave. That was the old skool.

I love Hidden Earth but maybe the stomp is getting dated.

The organsiationn is world class but is it time for a update from the traditional rock bands which usually play at the stomp?

Food for thought...... over to you

Dearest Darling Les,

please please please please DON'T book Loose Change for the stomp like you did for the Mendip caving thing last summer.  They were absolutely terrible.  Most people went to the Queen Vic pub instead as the music was too loud and it was old school heavy rock.  I remember going to listen to them for 5 minutes and seeing about 10 people out of 200 dancing whilst everyone else stood outside.  Paul Brocks DJing at Rat Fest was much more in the frame of what modern cavers like to hear - and I don;'t just mean student types.  All cavers like a few classic tracks.  Gone have the days of ACDC and Led Zeplin.  I remember Loose Change at a Hidden Earth a few years back and they were terrible then too.  Poorly done covers of very retro stuff.  No one was really dancing then either and I remember a whole bunch of old and young cavers alike leaving and going off into the town to find a pub instead.

I for one love the Stomps but recently they have got a little tired.  I won't by buying a Stomp ticket if Loose Change are on the bill.  Please please please find something different even if it is a different rock band.

yours faithfully,
Busty

I used all the rock stuff but nowadays prefer the quieter bar to chat and socialise - problem as ever you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Les you are the organiser you chose the band and music you want cos nobody is queing up to do the job for you!!

Clearly the answer to this is that latest innovation the 'silent disco'.  Everybody gets a pair of cordless headphones and has a choice of music.  The headbangers do their stuff while others wave their arms around in a trance induced state, you can even jitterbug to Glenn Miller, while those around enjoy a quiet drink!

But seriously...  I think Busty is a little unkind to Loose Change (I like them) but this is a generational thing and, having encouraged younger cavers to participate, it probably is time to let them take over the dance floor from the old rockers.  I shall miss you Loose Change...

Rob , are those photos not actually of Hidden Earth. And wasn't the band Nigel Atkins aberration.

Im with busty,

I know you cant please everyone, but 1960's rock covers are really not my thing at all (full on '91 style techno club for me please).

A dj playing a right good mix of stuff, from rock classics to modern dance would be cool, Bit like the stuff Radiosoulwax (2 many DJ's) do.

I harbour fantasies about putting a set together for hidden earth but realistically I wont have the time at all, so Im guessing it'll be another rock band.

Thats fine, and I'll be found propping the bar up chewing someones ear off.

Rob - your pictures are good but only show the 50-70 people in the main room and not the 300plus who were sitting outside in the canteen area (both young and old cavers).  Also the band last year were Rockaholic who are some what better than Loose Change although still not brilliant.

I would ideally like to see a DJ playing music from the 60's to 90's covering both rock, pop and some classic dance (not necessarily techno modern stuff).  Paul Brock DJed for RatFest with vinyl and he had a good collection of classic and modern stuff.  This sort of thing I think would appeal to young and old cavers.  Everyone dances to Sweet Child of Mine by Guns and Roses but not everyone dances to other heavier rock stuff.

Perhaps do a vote on here for the different sorts of things like DJ, Rock Band, Ceileih etc and see what people think?

Lastly the BEC are only too happy to help Les with the music arrangements for the Stomp - we offered last year we offered for the mendip summer thing but Les had already booked Loose Change and didn't need our help.  This coming year we are happy to assist if required.  Poor Les does have a lot to do organising it all annually.

I thought Loose Change were really good and the band last year were awful. All a matter of taste!

Is that why I can't see your buff muscular form in Rob's photos, Pete?

is there a requirement to remove your top and dance in your bra or is that optional? i seem to remember allot of flesh at the last stomp,...and being shoved around when dancing turned to genrally just pushing people over.

Interesting point that one, I've always enjoyed my dancing me, loved going clubbing, but thats the problem with a rock band, you cant really dance to it, which is why the stomps end up as a bit of a brawl really. And basically, these days, that puts me right off (especially following a broken nose a few years ago).

Personally I love Ceilighs (sp?) but would also enjoy 60s-90s...then again I've danced* at every stomp I've been to in the last 6 years so maybe I'm just easily pleased?

Re bands for the stomp:

Saw a tribute band for Nigel Atkins' 'Rockaholic' the other week - excellent stuff. They were called 'I can't believe it's not Nigel Atkins and Rockaholic'. Went down a storm at Wigton primitive methodist hall last wednesday week, except for the short acoustic set which borrowed too heavily from the John Denver / Roger Whittaker canon. Good whistler mind. See reviews at www.musttryandgetoutmore.uk

Alternatively, stripped-down Italian emo folkmetal? It gets 'em up and dancing everytime over in Egremont anyway.

Been to a good few stomps and ceilidhs from the Manchester days onwards. Once upon a time large numbers of cavers ended up hot and sweaty, slightly bruised and pretty tired from music appealing to the masses...or is that folk memory?

I think maybe the DJ option could be the way to go with a variety of music aimed at getting people on the floor and keeping them there, or at least getting everyone up for a few. Keeping the lights on fairly bright at some venues has never helped and some bands have been a bit samey, only appealing to a limited number of people.

I'll buy my ticket as usual...but will I be inspired? :D

hi there i don't know if you would be interested. i have a full DJ rig including decks, speakers, amp, lighting rig and lights and a massive collection of 70's to nowdays music and would practically do it for nothing. my only thing i don't have is transport to get it there. if anyone is interested let me no.
