How was Hidden Earth?

How about a report on how this year's Hidden Earth went for those of us who couldn't attend?

got there too late on friday to see the china thingy (thanks to a big crash on the M6.) drank heavily friday night. Too hungover saturday morning to visit a lecture. Hung out in the bar socialising till mid day when I had to scarper to a wedding in northumberland. persuaded the missus to call in on our way back on sunday and managed to catch Simms and Whitlocks Mexico lecture which was very good (and funny).

Trade hall was very small compared to last year.

Pity I missed the stomp.

Personally I really like the Arts center as a venue, but I did hear a lot of criticism flying around.

So what in particular are peoples gripes with the place.

Mine would be accommodation.

Dont know what the camping was like but folks were moaning about the proximity i.e. it was too far away.

What time did the youth hostel shut. Last time I was at the arts center (for the climbing equivalent) it closed its doors at 11.15.

This years was my first Hidden Earth and now I can't think why I haven't been to any previous ones. I was brilliant, the talks were good and gave us lots of ideas for large foreign trips. All we need now are some people and some money.
The venue was generally excellent with theatres aplenty and full AV in all.
They did however run out of real ale by about 9pm on the Saturday night, can you believe they had only bought 309 gallons.
The camping was just a farmers field with a porta-loo in the corner and it was 30 minutes quick walking in the rain. At night this is made more fun in the fact that there is no footpath for the last bit near campsite and you are forced to walk down the slip road of the main road. But hey by this point we were all wasted and didn't care.

would have to agree that the campsite was a bit further away than the advertised 15 mins but at the end of the day I was grateful they found somewhere and it was dirt cheap (£6 night per tent for whole weekend) Walking back pissed, crossing the dual carriageway certainly did add a 'sporting effect' to the walk home.

overall I thought it was great, pity I can't afford to go to China or anywhere come to think about it :( but the dales does the job nicely for now!

definately a southern orientated thing aswell, where were all the northerners? at least 75% must have been speaking mendip? :D

Just like to give a big thanks to everyone that my team and I managed to surcum into buying a ticket for the raffle. We managed to raise £270 for the Ghar Parau Foundation.

THANKS!!

i really enjoyed it - my 2nd one :)

Northern round up inspired me to do a bit more digging - lots of people seem to be finding stuff :)

Mexico lecture was very good - glad to get all the confusion cleared up - well lectured + very fun :)

'how caves are formed' was interesting and fun - next year we need one on how stals are formed too :D i think stals are fascinating

I really liked the winning video - as soon as it's available to buy i know a couple of people who want one (myself included) - how do we get hold of them?, the whole audience was in hysterics - well worth waiting for them to find the other entrants' videos first!

camping was ok - there was plenty of room, and i was too drunk to worry about the walk on the dual carrigeway too!

altogether a great weekend - i'll be there next year - woo

(maybe we'll be in the northern round up showing all the amazing pictures of crematorium pot main streamway! )

I cant belive they drunk the bar dry of bitter.

Aparently JT asked for a pint on saturday night and was informed that 309 gallons of beer had been drunk in 2 days and that was more than they normaly get through in a week.

Well done chaps and chapesses.

:drink:

My first! Thought it was pretty good. I also would like to get a copy of that film.

I thought the beer drinking was impressive, especially as no one seemed to be particularly pissed. Maybe we all sweated it out in the stomp.

Better organisation would have been nice though -- I ended up resorting to just finding a theatre and waiting to see what would get shown next! Maybe a board showing the latest version of the timetable?

Anyone else notice that Hidden Earth was in the Times HES conference?

'definately a southern orientated thing aswell, where were all the northerners?'

You obviousley didn't look hard enough, although the club stands were placed in a room no one could find :( . There was plenty of referance to the northerners in the closing ceromony seen as we nearly cleared up in the prise giving.
