An excellent speech, an entirely appropriate analogy for the point Tim was making. Maybe some of you need to listen to it again, if you really fail to grasp this.

I listened again. Can someone just tell me what the point was, so I can quit worrying about it?
If you have to explain it...

People who have a different perspective from the mainstream are not trolls. I would far rather read other peoples viewpoints regardless of whether I agree with them, as it helps to focus on what I think, and perhaps alter my viewpoint? I would rather read a politely expressed view that I don't agree with than a string of abuse targeted towards them.

It's not having a different viewpoint that makes kenilworth a troll, it's the blatant WUMing (windup merchanting) at every possibility. Not sure he actually has a different viewpoint, or a viewpoint at all, other than one wanting to itch people's sh*t.

Really? I hadn't noticed any winding up - just an interesting observation that I actually sympathise with. If it winds YOU up - perhaps that's not actually his problem?

Bradw if you think we're abusing someone on the forum, perhaps you should set up two polls.
1) are we abusing the person you allude to.
2) is the person a troll.

This constant accusation - I noticed it before I joined - is just so wearisome. No need for a poll - the best thing they say to do with a troll is ignore them. Which, if he is, you aren't.

It's one of the less likeable characteristics of this forum that just about anyone that offers an opinion that doesn't follow the Forum line gets abuse.

Doesn't matter whether the opinion is 'politely' expressed or not, there's  still a queue of keyboard warriors.....

Thanks for the advice, No Problem!

Hey all

I never knew my intro at Kendal would be recorded and posted on here. But in any case it was an introduction to the Underground Session at what is claimed by the organisers to be the largest mountain film festival in the world.  A great opportunity not to be missed and this ahead of a session that showcased great British cave photography, cave diving achievements and dedicated caving in far away places.  The caving involvement is growing at the event and an appreciation of caving by a much wider audience is evidenced in the peoples choice of photo and film - the winners were both on the subject of caving.  I wanted to put out a positive message which i think I did and it was well received.  I'm not very comfortable at standing up in front of an audience as can be seen by my body language.  I try, I do it out there where it matters and I hope to improve the image of caves and caving and be encouraging and welcoming to anyone interested in taking up our sport.  If you don't like that then you're welcome to say so on here but don't be surprised if you hold a minority view.  The analogy with mountains is one that I used in an article to non cavers and from the responses I got it is clear that it helped them appreciate caves a lot more.  I get that Kenilworth and BradW don't get it or don't like it.  You are welcome to your opinion, welcome to put that opinion on here but I know you are in the minority.  Readers will make up their own mind as to what your motives really are, but please everybody, let everyone have a say if they keep it civil and please don't bash the forum just because people don't agree with your minority views.

Fantastic talk Tim,

I've shared it with friends online and talked of it up at Majlis today.

Two comments. One, Kenilworth is a very thoughtful person who has certain views and opinions. Why should he not express them without being mocked or abused. Secondly when is the Three Counties fountain being marketed?

Fixed that for you, Tim  :) . mrodoc seems very sensible. Minority or majority views? It really isn't important. This isn't an election or popularity contest.

Most people have a different opinion - I get it. But they are genuinely held beliefs. Myself and Droid disagree on a lot of items, but I respect his views are genuinely held, and he respects I'm a curmudgeonly git that says exactly what I think, political correctness be damned.

However -  Kenilworth is a *very* good troll. So good in fact, that a lot of people don't spot that he is one. Go have a read with your "open mind" and see that he only dives into threads which have a degree of controversy, or starts ones likely to have that same controversy. Like all trolls, he likes attention, and those threads are the best way to get what he craves. I do keep telling people to ignore him, but it seems he's just that little bit too good for them too easily be able to do that.

I totally agree with Newstuff. He's probably been kicked off forums in the US which is why he's trolling over here.

Alastair has the right idea and it's the first time I've used my ignore list.

Go to your profile and choose 'Modify profile'. At the bottom of the drop-down menu is your buddies and ignore list. Put the troll in the box and it's done.

Paul, I don't think anybody is suggesting that anybody is not sticking to acceptable use policy. But I think leaving dealing with trolling to the moderators is not an option. A troll is usually only percieved as troll by certain people and it is up to those people to deal with it how they decide to deal with it. Ignoring them is the usual advice and the 'ignore list' is a tool provided by the forum to help people do that.
