Jim Roberts, Starkholmes, Matlock

Sad news, I was informed earlier this week by John Wilmot that Jim Roberts had died and that his funeral is on Tuesday 29th March at Brimington Crematorium, Chesterfield at 8.30am.

In brief, Jim was an Ex-miner who worked at both Jugholes and Riber Mine, Matlock in the 1950's. Jim was also a mine & cave explorer and joined the Masson Caving Group in the 1980's. A couple of personal memories of Jim were a visit to Riber Mine (two visits in 1993 & 2000) and on one of these visits, as we were making our way down the steep incline entrance we stopped at a short side working and Jim said, 'I excavated that'! Jim was also my assistant, when we explored Jugholes, with a party of ladies from Doncaster! I have a picture (slide) of Jim with these ladies after the trip. Happy days!

Regards, Paul.

Sad news Paul, I think Jim was probably the last surviving lead miner  - Riber being the last attempt in Derbyshire to mine for lead as opposed to the various types of spar.
