Left Footed Pantin

(y) I'm glad we agree (but just to split that last hair - the attachment point for the hand jammer is on the left so it's not the cows tail that crosses your body it's the footloop rope).

It could be either the long cowstail or footloop depending which you run across front (in order to avoid attaching yourself 'around' the up rope) . Wrapping footloop rope over front of rope would be an even worse scenario. Neither is good.

Possibly it's best if khakipuce just tries it out, and sees what happens with either cord/knot/attachment metalwork pulling into the front of the chest jammer.

I have a split cowstail, short on left, long on right, precisely so that there is no routing of any system components across the pitch rope.

Again, not that odd in France, not seen anyone else doing it over here. Safety cord to right is acceptable with either L/F Pantin, or no Pantin. With a R/F Pantin it would seem counter productive.

Love these four way chats!  ;)

3/4 Pennine majority :)

Yeah I might have had a bit of a dyspraxic moment there on left and right safety cord  :-[ (mine is in fact far left beyond cowstails). Its tricky to get down in words.

Reckon Im about right though as to why Petzl dont recomend left pantin for the system and kit arrangment that they have specified, and why they think it makes rebelays more involved.

Left or right foot Pantin?

I think the authors of Alpine caving techniques have the correct explanation.  One prefers right foot the other prefers left foot.  They say it makes a difference to how you should have your cowstails.  Myself I use left foot pantin, my cowstails are seperate.  I have long cowstail on the far right of my D ring and the short cowstail on the far left.    If you use the right foot Pantin then your cowstails should be the more traditional single rope for both kind.

which would be intriguing if it had anything at all to do with the actual question, which was something about why Petzl don't recommend a left foot pantin  o_O

My guess is that most people do not use seperate cowstails, so most will want a right foot pantin. Also historically they started by only making right foot Pantin.    It is, as said above, that most people are right handed and rig, sorry place, rebelays to the right of the hang.  It can be a pain if you get the cowstails / footloop(s) / rope crossed and then spend time sorting the mess out.    If your gear is in the right order on the D ring you should not get in a mess.
