Having done lots of Slate Mine, I concur with an earlier suggestion that the colour temperature issue is a red herring.
My observations:
Nova 3 = Fan-bleedin-tastic in natural cave* for all previous stated reasons including lack of battery pack and longevity. Not so good in slate mines. Not sure why, don't really care, just know.
Prefered set up for slate, oldham and 4 cell Mag. Don't think prefer oldham for colour temp and certainly not for brightness, but think for throw and spot of beam.
Have used large rechargable spot from car type shops. Bloody excellent in massive chambers, pain in arse to carry round though. Depends on purpose of trip as to whether I would bother.
Out of date marine flares - fantastic, but beware of smoke
