Locked topics

Why have two recent threads (both relating to donations to help the running of this site) been locked? I find this hard to understand and would appreciate an explanation.

The original one is locked because it is purely an information post.

The second one was locked because somebody was just trying to be a smart arse.

He doesn't mince his words does he?  :)

Just an observation - considering how non-conforming and rebellious many cavers can be, it is a pleasant fact that so few interventions are necessary on this forum.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Fair enough, this I can understand.

Not too sure about this one. Does this mean that any topic expressing opinions the administrator does not agree with will be locked? Will a topic be locked (or even removed) if someone asks what may be perceived as awkward questions?

This is in the forum policy statement:

Arguing with moderator's decisions on the public forum. Feel free to contact the mod team if you disagree with a decision but do it privately. If you're banned then use the email contact form.

Be careful, NigR - you might get a ban!  ;)

As for advertising, there isn't anything mentioned apart from spamming, but I would have thought it was common sense not to push yourself too much when trying to advertise stuff. There is a 'For Sale' section for this purpose.

No, not at all, there wasn't an awkward question as far as I can see.

The poster (by the way, we can trace multiple accounts via IP addresses you know ;) ) was insinuating that I insulted him. Now if I had insulted him then that would be justified, but me saying "for fucks sake" is not an insult in anyones book. A personal insult is something along the lines of "you bleeping bleep", etc....

Fair enough if that person is offended by the word "f***" but that's a different issue, and there is no restriction on swearing on this forum.

Well I quite like swearing tbh :)

It's part of our rich language and there's some lovely swear-words. Also, this doesn't pretend to be some sort of family friendly forum. You have to be over 13 to sign up, so it's not like any kids are going to start weeping over the language on here.

Sorry bubba, but I don't think that's a good reason to lock a thread.

Personally I'd rather suffer a few dickheads than have censorship.

Just an opinion. Please don't ban me :)

I think locking the first thread was sound,

As far as the second one is concerned I didnt have a clue what it was about (selling books or personal ego stuff ,or possibly donations to uk caving)

Agreed.. As long as the post contains all the information anyone could want then there is no reason for it be open to posts.

Personally I'd rather suffer a few dickheads than have censorship.
Indeed, I don't like censorship either but this was a post that looked very much like it was going nowhere, apart from maybe downhill.. There is no value in keeping posts of this nature open, they don't benefit anyone.

This is Bubba's board. Whatever I think about the relative merits of  dickheads and censorship, when it comes down to it, Bubba makes the rules, and that's only fair because he does the hard work to keep this thing going. And a damned fine job he's making of it, as can be seen by the number of people who read and post regularly and the quality of the caving related threads.

Don't forget that you can support Bubba directly - where it really helps! - by bunging a few quid into the bottomless slush pit which this forum represents - consider it a form of cave conservation!  (y)

Well it wasn't actually me who locked it, so perhaps I should have really let the actual "lockee" speak for himself, but i suspect his reasons for doing so were similar to those which I've stated.

Moderation decisions rarely please everyone, and whilst I don't particularly agree with censorship either, moderation has it's place. Most forums i've seen that don't have good moderation quickly descend into pretty horrible places. Anyway, nothing was actually censored, it's there for all to see.

Not sure who I'm disagreeing with here but don't think it should have been locked. Move it to idle chat there's enough crap in there it could have got quietly lost. Given the history of this problem it seems like the easiest solution. Certainly this topic wouldn't have been going on.

Oh yeah is the sudden appearance of two threads discussing how the caving community pays this boards bills a sign that it's hands in pockets time again? In which case just holler.
