I wondered the same. Could it be that he is attention seeking, perhaps he goes off trekking then reports himself as missing and waits to be found. Perhaps he needs professional help?

I think the point here is that this chap for reasons unknown goes missing often and the police  and other emergency services are there to help search for and find him. They do not question or judge - they do their job and  big thank-you to them.

But he really does need some help in other ways and I hope he gets that help!
