Masson Mine

Hi all were going to masson mine on sat through the walk-in-entrance which never been too. Got told about after coming out of jug holes, got told it near the quarry (unsure exactly were thought). Is it a good 1 to visit? Next question is masson mine to youd level through trip keep reading about this is this still possable? looks really good.

There are two entrances in the back of the spar opencast at Masson Hill, though I'd say they're only walk-in in the sense that you don't need  to bring string or ladders to get in... It is quite extensive and spacious inside, and worth visiting. As for Gentlewomans through trip, it's entirely possible provided you can find the shaft!

I didn't think it was possible to get from Masson itself into Youd's because the connection was trashed by the opencast. Is there now a way?

The only way is from the surface shaft just east of the quarry. The connecting passages were quarried away in the 1980's.

Hi, go over the gate as for route into quarry, keep following left hand fence until you are above first of the climbing routes, climb over fence on left, there is a spotable worn route through blackthorn bushes, follow for short distance to boulder the you can wriggle under to top of shaft. If you want company, myself and Owd Git can always be persuaded on trip, particularly if someone else is going to dig it!

Shouldn't need to be dug out at the moment because some mason lads dug it out very well for their through trip

Were is the other entrance then? One in the corner over the slab, wheres the other?

Like O.G said Mark is up on the right as you walk down into quarry.  Not so long back I tried to make  my way back out of the mine using this as an exit but got in a pickle with route finding, got confused in a coffin level and ended up coming out the way I went in!

  Found Steel arch level while having a mooch about as well which was quite interesting

A little bit off the beaten track but worth having a look for if you go for it!  Remember a sling or two coming in handy to help with a short climb up.

I might take you up on your offer, went in masson mine yesterday and was very impressed going back in 2 week to visit it again(loads to see) but i'm really interested in gentlewomans-youds level through trip.

Went back today hoping to do the though trip from the side of the quarry to the main bit of masson, brilliant trip proper caving tight cralls only thing missing was no drops. Really enjoyed it. But came across a big drop with very thick rope down it does this go anywhere? ? Also found gentlewomens shaft want to do this soon if anyone's interested?  ?

The big drop being a rectangular hand-picked shaft with a gym rope it in it? That's the continuation down to further workings and the back end of the showcave as I remember.

pwhole is correct. it leads through a short low crawly bit with a puddle in it then into walking passage. Almost at the end of this turn left and carefully go down the slope into the big chamber (Crichman Chamber). It makes a nice short little through trip for an evening going in the side entrance, down this bit of vertical & out of the back entrance to the quarry.

If you want plenty of crawly, do the King Mine part of the system, lots of flat-out in mud bits....:ras:

But take great care if passing under King Shaft into that section of the mine. Hanging death & hanging timbers and debris abound.
