    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

Mendip Caves on Wikipedia

Hi,

Martin Rowe of Mendip Caving suggested I ask the experts on here for some help.

I’ve recently been editing the Mendips Hills page on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mendip_Hills, especially the Sites of Special Scientific Interest. When I asked for advice on improving the article it was suggested I write about walking, climbing, caves etc. When I found out there are so many caves I started a separate article on the Caves at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caves_of_the_Mendip_Hills#List_of_caves

This includes some general info & then a (incomplete) list of caves some of which have dimensions etc but not all. I’m currently doing articles for each of the caves shown in the list – but any additional info, pictures etc would be really good – remembering that it’s an encyclopedia & doesn’t allow advertising etc.

Any help appreciated.

There is also an international "List of caves" on wikipedia that you can draw from, or contribute to... just type in "List of caves" in the Search then scroll down to United Kingdom.

You might want to study - and contribute to the UKcaving Wiki currently under construction.

http://ukcaving.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Its only just in its infancy, but one day, we hope it will be a comprehensive knowledge repository for all UK caves.

I think that a basic *List* of caves etc would be great on wikipedia - but you have to careful as to how much detail you include. Will it stay up to date, in particular with regards to access rights/trespass agreements, which can and do change.

Thanks to Ian & SamT for the responses and suggestions.

I'm not planning to add things as detailed as access rights etc as wikipedia is very much an encyclopedia aimed at the general population (of the world) rather than those likely to actually need to know who has the key.

As far as the UKcaving Wiki goes that is probably the right place for that level of detail - but to start populating it you can copy what is on wikipedia as long as you say where it came from under Creative Commons see GNU Free Documentation License on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GFDL for full details.

I hope to do articles for a few more of the Mendip caves in the next week or so & any further comments or advice would be appreciated.
