Metz 45 flash

Hi All,

Having just lost my favourite Sunpak flash to the depths of the earth I'm looking to replace it with something a little more powerful, such as one of the Metz 45 series flashes. I am currently using the Yongnuo RF-603 flash slaves with some success. They have a limit of 12V trigger voltage and I'm aware some early models of the CT series have a very high trigger voltage.

What do Metz users here use as slaves?

Also I can see from photos that Metz flashes don't have the typical hot shoe seen on other types. So how do you connect it to the slave?

Any help is really appreciated!

I use those very same Yongnuo slaves and a Metz 45. Just buy one of the Metz flashes that has a lower voltage. Can check on

You can get a cable that connects the flash to the PC cable port on the back of the slaves meaning that you don't need a hot shoe adapter. It sometimes, but certainly not always comes with the flash if you're looking on ebay.

The 45 series really are great flashes and being able to use them remotely opens up whole new realms of ways of firing them into peoples eyes back at the hut afterwards. (Not at full power obviously!)

It might be worth noting that they annoyingly don't quite fit into a standard 6L Daren drum, but do fit into the blue and white 7L drum.

Oooh, that sounds promising. I see many sell tge flash with a sync cable. Otherwise, do you know anything of these Metz45 slaves: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/261323437003?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649  I can't quite make sense of them and assume they're of no use to our purposes as they don't seem to use a battery source.

I have to say I think I really need their power and I have only ever (intentionally) blinded someone with approx a guide number of 35, so I think there's a lot more room for hilarity withand extra 10 GN!  ;)

Thanks again for the info, it's very helpful.

I have a Metz 45 and can use it with a Firefly slave by plugging the synch-lead into a hot-shoe adaptor.

That optical slave you linked to could well work, but it costs almost as much as a Yongnuo radio trigger which will be much more reliable and work over a greater range.

Great, thanks guys. Blackholesun, do you mind me asking which model of flash do you have because from looking at the voltages listed on that page, only the CL-1 seems to be below the 12V of the slave. I see the MZ series seem to be safe but they don't seem to easy to find.

Cheers again

I do have the 45-CL1. They come up reasonably regularly on ebay, and I think I got mine for about ?20 excl. postage. The MZ series will be very expensive. However, I believe some of the other 45's are safe, but it takes a bit of hunting around on the internet to find out exactly which as they're not all listed on that link.

Good stuff, I see a nice priced CL-3 on Ebay, actually cheaper than the CL-1, but don't wanna risk it, so the CL-1 sounds like a safe bet. Thanks again for the help!

Got the CL1 for ?34, works very nicely with Younuo slaves, delighted with it. Took it out the garden last night, worked perfectly and even woke up some birds. That's testament to how bloody bright they are!

Cheers for the info
