Mines in the Lake District

Does anyone know if there are any books on the mines in the Lake District? Not just a general book on mining, more one that tells you locations and so on. We were on holiday there last week and I had a poke around on one entrance but it didn't go very far before it got waterlogged. As we want to go back up there I'd like to find a few mines worth visiting.

Access is generally controlled for the better trips, e.g. Greenside.

Coniston Coppermine is OK though I believe.

There is a thread on Aditnow on the same subject.....

I'm not really after any major trips, it's a family holiday after all. An hours pottering about at most would do.

If you're in the Coniston area then the Copper and nearby Slate mines (Moss Head, Tilberthwaite/Cathedral - two names that I can recall off the top of my head) would probably do for a short jolly or two.

Not sure about books though, other than the above mentioned.

You could also try Thirlmere Mines by Ian Tyler (who also runs the mining museum in Keswick) - great book and full of nice grid reference numbers ;)

Ian Tyler has written loads of books on mines in the lakes, but one in particular sounds to be the thing youre after - 'The Lakes and Cumbriai mines guide' is a (large) pocket size book with a list of every mine in the area including grid reference and short descriptions. Have seen it on the following site

Have a look at  http://www.keswickminingmuseum.co.uk/index.htm and give him a ring. The museum itself is quite an experience - especially if Ian's on guard when you visit.

The Eric Holland guide to coniston coppermines is a gem and very user friendly.

I've just got back from a holiday in Coniston and Eric Hollands book is on sale in the shops there so definitely still available.

I already had a copy and it is excellent especially for just pottering. It contains sketch plans and gives a pretty good idea of what you might encounter so you can decide if a particular site is suitable for your party. It only covers copper though and not the slate workings.

I limited myself to the easier walk in levels but there was still plenty to occupy my evenings whilst Mrs T watched her "soaps".
