Nearest cave to.......

Carrying on from the thread from Amy (IM SO EXCITEDDD) there seems to have been a bit of a gauntlet thrown down on cave entrances and closeness to huts/pubs.

I reckon the Mendips can win this one so here goes.

Wessec CC to North Hill Swallett. Appx. 100m (I'm guessing, if anyone gets closer I'll measure) door to door.

Hunters Lodge Inn to Hunters Lodge Inn Sink. Appx. 10 metres door to door. If anyone builds an extension, it will be inside the pub.

I'm guessing we can beat the SWCC to OFD and surely nobody can get closer than the Hunters.

Any suggestions?

Scotts Hollow (in WV) has its entrance in the basement of a caving club property.  Boar Hole (also WV) is about 100 m from Carroll Bassett's back door.

Hmm.OK. I must admit I was thinking UK.

Fairy 'nuff. I was just thinking that the thread was influenced by Amy's one & she's not from round here.

I was about to say Scotts Hollow (although I have yet to cave in WV at all I have heard of it). I think "in the basement" might win? lol

As for places I have been too...

Lonestar Preserve (Louisville Grotto) in Kentucky also has a lot of caves right on the property and there is a heated enclosed shelter area complete with fridges and freezers so Id think it counts as a hut? Lonestar Saltpeter Cave is maybe 50meters from it. There are a bunch of other smaller caves on the 60ish acre property too.

Bryant's Cave in Indiana is literally 10 feet out the backdoor of the owner's house. 50 feet from the hut they are kind enough to let us rent as a grotto when we go there. Very caver-friendly owners.

Tumbling Rock in Alabama is maybe 30 feet from Nathan William's front porch.

Uhmm I know I am missing some. tl/dr we have a lot of caves-close-to-houses.

Mind you though we dont have club huts like you do really. There are caver-friendly people, or cavers who live right there, but its not like...a bunkhouse type thing set up for cavers normally. Lonestar would come the closest to counting for that.

It's not a club hut or pub but if it was Robinsons would be a good candidate!

Not a cave but a mine in the floor of the DCC museum room at Alderley Edge.

Forgot about this one...

How 'bout this in your downtown right outside of the American Cave Museum? Hidden River cave. Dont go when it's wet though....it will completely sump, water will be up past those stairs going down into it...Impressive for such a huge cave but it has a very large drainage basin... something around 100 square miles iirc, so any rain and poooooof it fills up. It's uh...a crazy huge cave.

Damn! Forgot that one. The pub is very close, too.

BEC has Rose Cottage Cave and St Cuthbert's Swallet pretty much on their doorstep, closer than WCC are to a cave i believe! I have a feeling clubs wise the MCG would win with their dig/cave in the garden though.

TSG to Cave Dale Cave No 1 can't be much more than a couple of hundred metres.
Does the Coe at Bagshawe count?

Why shouldn't the Coe and Bagshawe count, disgusting that it is that the Eldon are associated with a restricted access cave.

With Whitewalls and SWCC, I was also thinking about total passage length accessible from the huts. I would imagine Whitewalls just about wins that one? Not totally sure though but with 2 of the UKs top 5 a walk away it must be.

Nobody has mentioned yet that Bull Pot Farm is a stones throw away from the Three Counties Cave System, the best caving in the country.

Stump Cross entrance is inside the building! I don't know if they sell beer in there though.

I guess that your use of the word 'country'  (rather than 'the UK') was deliberate . . . . .  :)

One of the shafts of Wheal Leisure is still open in the floor of the Green Parrot Pub in Perranporth but it's flooded to the top.  They draped fairy lights down it one Christmas.  You think I'm making this up don't you, but I'm not.

And if we're following the Robinson's Pot analogy, how about Bruntscar Cave?

Caving friends found an old well inside the Yorkshire barn they converted into a house so, after abseiling it (its only about 20ft to about 3 ft of water),  they put lights in and topped it with thick glass - very surreal to walk across an illumiated void in someone's living room!
