Caving friends found an old well inside the Yorkshire barn they converted into a house so, after abseiling it (its only about 20ft to about 3 ft of water),  they put lights in and topped it with thick glass - very surreal to walk across an illumiated void in someone's living room!

I remember being in a house in Kent where they'd done the same to the stream that flowed under their living room. Not just an illuminated void, but fish too!

My previous house in Brassington, Derbyshire had a well in the garden about 5 feet away.

Even better, there's a house in Middelton by Wirksworth, Derbyshire has a mine passage accesible from within the house, in one of the walls. The owners have put a glass panel over it and made it into a feature.

Sat here in the living room, also in Derbyshire, there's a mine adit into an old lead mine less than 100 feet away, but it's in a neighbour's garden...
