I heard talk some time ogo that Nenthead access may be more controlled, anyone know if this is the case or is it still the old set up?

There was talk about bolting the gates on the adits (only spanner needed to open and close), but nothing was done about it. With the heritage trust gone bump, probably will not happen for a while. Access in the main valley for Smallcleugh, Rampgill, Caplecleugh, Rampgill Firestone, Scaleburn Firestone, Brownley Hill, Nentsberry Haggs open as usual. Caplecleugh High Level was pad locked for a while, not sure if it still is (locked for archaeological activities) and Middlecleugh locked.

Thanks guys for the information, I may be heading up there with a small group at the weekend, didn't want to find it all locked up!

Given that the mods are often keen to move things to the correct area, shouldn't this be in "Other Areas?" Nenthead is about as close to Yorkshire as North Wales is  ;)

Or may be rename Yorkshire to "Three Counties"

Nenthead is of course in Cumbria but really very close to the borders of Northunberland and Durham. I'm sure I've seen somewhere that Rampgill connect(ed) to Coalcleugh (which is in Northumberland) but does it also go under the hill into Durham. I suppose the question I'm asking is if this is another "Three Counties" system of it own?

I was there in November and everything was open as usual. Caplecleugh High Level  was still locked (but IMHO it's a dismal place). Thompson's Level (opposite Smallcleugh) was gated though the lock had been beaten open. Keep an eye on the mine explorers website (www.mineexplorer.org.uk) as they're fairly active in that neck of the woods and often post trip reports.

If you follow Rampgill Level through the NORPEX extension, you eventually come to a gate that marks the county border between Cumbria and Northumberland but I've never seen anything to suggest it continued into Durham. Sorry.

Rampgill is reputed to have connected with the Barney Craig level which comes from Coalcleugh. That would make it a 2 county system for a start.
I'm not sure of any links into Durham.

Chris.
